Despite a 4-2 win against Costa Rica, Germany is eliminated from the World Cup.

The TZ individual review of the performance of the DFB stars in the Al-Bayt Stadium in Al-Khor.

Munich/Al-Khor – Germany was challenged against Costa Rica for the last preliminary round match of the 2022 World Cup on Thursday evening (you can read the ticker for the game here).

Despite a 4-2 victory, it was not enough to qualify for the round of 16, as Spain lost 2-1 to Japan at the same time.

The

individual review

of the World Cup game of the DFB team against Costa Rica.

Manuel Neuer

With an amazing reflex, he prevented the possible surprise compensation shortly before half-time.

At 1:1, however, he couldn't hold on to the crucial first header.

He didn't look good when Costa Rica led 2-1.

grade: 4

Joshua Kimmich

The national coach set up his midfield boss as a right-back.

Kimmich showed that the team spirit is paramount for him and played his role with a lot of pressure forward - apart from a bad pass - in an exemplary manner.

In the second half, he switched back to central midfield and pulled the strings there and threw himself into every duel.

Note 3

Niklas Sule

In the reverse movement, Süle was not really challenged against the physically inferior opponents.

At 1: 1, however, he only trotted backwards as an alibi.

When fast passes from the defensive were required, he delayed the game.

grade: 5

Antonio Rudiger

Rüdiger made a blunder just before half-time when he only half-heartedly tackled a running duel in his own penalty area.

He didn't radiate the sovereignty that was required of him.

When equalizing not consistently on the man.

David Raum

Light and shadow for the left-back, who played his third World Cup game from the start.

He prepared Gnabry's goal for a 1-0 lead with a cross, but his other crosses were too imprecise.

In addition, he was always good for a gross blunder on the backward movement.

Grade: 4

from 66. Kai Havertz: Actually came on too late for a grade.

But scored a brace.

Ilkay Gundogan

Again and again the England legionnaire tried to drive in the last third.

But there were no brilliant ideas and, above all, passes.

Grade: 4

from 55. Niclas Füllkrug: This time the Werder Bremen center forward missed a few chances, but still scored to make it 4:2.

Note 3

Leon Goretzka

Aside from a first-half header, it was an unremarkable performance from the muscular midfielder.

It is quite possible that muscular problems were already plaguing him in advance.

That's why he stayed in the dressing room after the break.

Grade: 4

from 46. Lukas Klostermann: Did his job as a right-back relatively reliably.

Note 3

Serge Gnabry

Best player in a confused German team.

Gnabry not only ensured the early 1-0 lead, he also increasingly worked backwards.

A significant increase in performance compared to the first two games.

Note 3

Jamal Musiala

In the end he had several post bad luck.

In some actions he seemed too playful.

Nevertheless, always dangerous.

Leroy Sane

Leroy Sané: In his first starting XI appearance at the tournament, he seemed ready, but for a player of his exceptional quality, who can decide a game on his own, the performance was not enough.

grade: 4

Thomas Müller

The original Bavarian miserably missed a free header in front of Costa Rica goalkeeper Navas.

Otherwise, the offensive player was on the road a lot and loudly as usual, but - as in the previous games - he lacked the penetrating power.

After the game he announced his retirement.

Grade: 5

from 67. Mario Götze: no rating

The end of Germany is also discussed in the international press.
