Iran – On the third and final day of the preliminary round of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Iran faced the USA.

An explosive duel in which a place in the round of 16 was at stake.

Iran had the better starting position, as a draw would have been enough to advance to the knockout phase.

USA were unbeaten in their first two games against Wales and England and needed a win to avoid going home after the group stage.

Christian Pulisic scored the only goal of the game and propelled the USA into the last 16 of the World Cup, where they now meet the Netherlands.

World Cup 2022: Iranian people celebrate defeat against USA

Not everyone in Iran found it regrettable that Iran lost out to arch-enemy USA at the World Cup in Qatar.

Although there were also many disappointed reactions, many Iranians were happy that their own team lost the World Cup and cheered after the defeat against the United States.

The background is that many Iranians refuse to support their national team because of the violent crackdown on the protests in the country that have been going on for two months.

Mehran Samak was one of the jubilant Iranians celebrating the Iran national team's elimination from the World Cup.

That was his undoing.

The Oslo-based human rights organization Iran Human Rights said the 27-year-old was shot in the head by security forces.

The New York-based Center for Human Rights in Iran confirmed that Mehran Samak had been killed by security forces while celebrating the World Cup defeat.

In the city of Bandar Ansali on the Caspian Sea, Samak honked his horn in his car during spontaneous protests against the Iranian system before he was shot, the human rights organizations said.

According to Iranian journalist Masih Alinejad, Samak's fiancé was sitting next to him in the car when the shots rang out.

“Iran is a country where people are very passionate about football.

Now they are on the streets in the city of Sanandaj celebrating the loss of their football team against USA.

They don't want the government to use sport to normalize their murderous regime," Masih Alinejad wrote on Twitter.

The human rights organization CHRI published a video of Samak's funeral on Wednesday (November 30).

In the video, mourners can be heard shouting "Death to the dictator."

This is directed against the spiritual leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and can be heard again and again in the protests across the country.
