In Germany against Costa Rica a referee whistles a World Cup game for the first time.

Expert Christoph Kramer reacts irritably to questions from ZDF presenter Katrin Müller-Hohenstein.

Mainz – Germany meets Costa Rica in the decisive group match at the 2022 World Cup – only a win keeps the chance of progressing alive.

The special thing about it: For the first time in the history of the men's World Cup, a woman will officiate a game.

Referee Stéphanie Frappart ensures a premiere.

FIFA announced this on Tuesday.

The news was still a topic in ZDF's World Cup program a day later, which obviously pissed off expert Christoph Kramer.

The 31-year-old was so enraged by the specific questions asked by presenter Katrin Müller-Hohenstein that a wild battle of words ensued.

World Cup referee discussion on ZDF: expert Christoph Kramer from Müller-Hohenstein irritated

The Wednesday of the World Cup was actually almost over on ZDF, the protagonists around the two experts Per Mertesacker and Christoph Kramer looked happily on their sofa seats towards the end of the day when presenter Katrin Müller-Hohenstein finally touched on a more serious topic.

Equal rights for women and men – in football.

“There is a story about this game tomorrow that is historic.

It will be the first time in World Cup history that a woman will referee a men's game.

It's a French woman, Stéphanie Frappart.

I've never been on the pitch, does it make a difference whether a woman or a man whistles?" Müller-Hohenstein introduces.

"No, not at all," says Kramer directly.

But KMH is not satisfied with the short and clear answer and digs deeper: “Then why is it news?” This really got Kramer excited.

World Cup expert Christoph Kramer fights live on ZDF with moderator Müller-Hohenstein

"Yeah, because we're living in 2022 and apparently that's newsworthy, I don't know," Kramer explains a little bitterly.

"But how long will it be... I think it's great...", Müller-Hohenstein doesn't give up.

"Yeah, well, but if that's the first woman ever in the men's tournament … then it's clear that it's news," the annoyed professional from Borussia Mönchengladbach tries to convey the news to the ZDF presenter to explain.

World Cup for ARD presenter ended – her colleague can continue to comment

Müller-Hohenstein now has a journalistic flair and formulates her question differently in order to get her desired answer: "Then the question is, how long will it be news?" Kramer, who has now calmed down, hopes that it will won't be long now, it must be something normal.

"It's not a gender issue, it's just a matter of performance.

I don't know her personally, but she seems to be really great at whistling and then it doesn't matter whether she whistles for women or men."

Frappart is the first female World Cup referee – Kramer clearly: "It's not a gender issue"

"Yes, I think so too.

We definitely placed that here as a topic," KMH ended the discussion and then the show.

Kramer, who feels like everything is "cool" and, according to world champion colleague Mertesacker, has swallowed a fortune cookie (satire by tz columnist Jörg Heinrich), is not the first to show a flair when it comes to socio-political issues.

In the dispute over the "One Love" bandage, Kramer tore his patience live on ZDF and described the whole discussion as "monkey theatre".

Frappart earned their commitment in the Germany game through performance.

The Frenchwoman has been whistling in Ligue 1 since 2019 - the top men's division in her home country.

In the same year, she also caused an international sensation when she was commissioned by UEFA to officiate in the Supercup duel between Champions League winners Liverpool FC and Europa League winners Chelsea FC.

In 2020 she was the first referee in the premier class for the game between Juventus and Dynamo Kyiv.

She was also the first referee in the Nations League and in the World Cup qualifiers.

World Cup: FIFA keeps female referees waiting – Klostermann considers woman at the whistle to be “the most normal thing in the world”

How long it is actually still worth the news that a woman is refereeing a men's game at a World Cup will probably also depend on FIFA.

Frappart had to wait a full twelve days for her first appearance at the World Cup.

Her colleagues Salima Mukansanga and Yoshimi Yamashita, who were also nominated, have so far been waiting in vain.

In any case, the German team seems to have no problem with the appointment.

"It's the most normal thing in the world," said national player Lukas Klostermann, "I've never paid attention to whether it's a woman or a man whistling."

Germany vs. Costa Rica: First World Cup referee Frappart can tip the scales

At their premiere, however, Frappart is faced with an explosive game about getting ahead, and the referee could definitely tip the scales in the end.

Because: Should Germany win against Costa Rica and Japan draw against Spain, the DFB-Elf could not only be tied with the Japanese, but also on goals.

Then the fair play rating would decide first, here both teams are tied with three yellow cards each.

If it stays that way, it would even have to be drawn who will move into the round of 16.
