After the World Cup: DFB President Neuendorf announces meetings with Hansi Flick and BVB boss Watzke

After the preliminary round of the DFB-Elf in Qatar, Association President Bernd Neuendorf announced a crisis talk with Hansi Flick.

Aki Watzke will also take part.

Doha - The shock of the early elimination of the German national team at the World Cup in Qatar runs deep.

The day after the preliminary round, the whole of Germany discussed the mistakes made in the last three games and took a hard stance on those responsible.

Before the departure of the German entourage, Bernd Neuendorf, President of the German Football Association, stepped in front of the microphone and outlined the action plan for processing the tournament.

"You can imagine that yesterday was a bitter disappointment for us," the 61-year-old introduced his statement.

“Leaving the tournament hurts tremendously.

We still have to look ahead and will initiate an orderly process on how to deal with this situation," said Neuendorf and continued: "This means that we have developed a roadmap".

The "timetable" now provides for a meeting in the coming week, as the DFB President, who was only elected in March, said.

"Hansi Flick, Aki Watzke and myself" will take part in the round table. BVB Managing Director Watzke has been the new Vice President of the DFB since the beginning of the year and will therefore have a say.

"It will be a first meeting where we will discuss how the situation is," said Neuendorf at Doha Airport.

But what is Neuendorf hoping for from the crisis meeting of the association leadership and the national coach?

"My expectation of the sporting management is that they carry out an initial analysis at this meeting, a sporting analysis of this tournament," announced the man from Düren.

Those responsible should, if possible, "develop prospects in their own country with a view to the European Championships," says Neuendorf, who also names specific components of the comprehensive process.

For example, "the development of the national team, our football since 2018, since the last World Cup" should be thoroughly analyzed.

This is "a requirement and a claim that we as the association management have for the sporting management in this situation".

“We will then hold further discussions on this basis.

I'm a big believer in clear procedures.

We initiated that.

We assume that we will conduct these discussions with one another respectfully - and also confidentially," said Neuendorf.

As the DFB President also states, no interim results or "water level reports" of the talks are published.

"When we have finished the talks and the analysis, we will come back to you with a result," the official told press representatives.

After leaving the 2022 World Cup: Neuendorf avoids questions about personal consequences

When asked whether personal consequences were excluded, Neuendorf reacted cryptically.

“We take the first step before the second.

Analysis means that we assess the situation.

That's the task we have to face now," was the diplomatic reply from the association's chairman.

Whether and which steps will now be taken will only become clear after the national coach has met Neuendorf and Aki Watzke.

For the rather inexperienced DFB president, who was previously only president of the Mittelrhein Football Association from 2019 to 2022, it will be the first real crisis talk.

Watzke, who is also chairman of the DFL supervisory board, could provide important input given his many years of experience in the professional business and thus contribute to the rebuilding of the national team.
