DFB team is eliminated from the World Cup - despite victory

It's a fiasco: Germany, a self-declared co-favourite, fails in the preliminary round of the 2022 World Cup. In the end, a win against Costa Rica is not enough.

Conclusion:

Dezember, 16.55 Uhr: Nur wenige Stunden vor dem Aufeinandertreffen ihrer Nationalteams bei der Weltmeisterschaft in Katar haben die Fußballverbände Spaniens und Japans eine Zusammenarbeit bekannt gegeben. Dies teilte der spanische Verband RFEF nach einer gemeinsamen Sitzung unter anderem mit den Verbandschefs Luis Rubiales und Kohzo Tashima an diesem Donnerstag in Doha mit. Die beiden Dachorganisationen hatten bereits 2020 per Handschlag eine Kooperation vereinbart, dann kam die Corona-Pandemie dazwischen. 

Spanien will in den nächsten Jahren in Asien für seine WM-Kandidatur gemeinsam mit Portugal und der Ukraine für das Turnier 2030 werben. Spanien und Japan planen Länderspiele auf verschiedenen Ebenen und eine Zusammenarbeit auch im Frauenfußball und Schiedsrichter-Wesen.

Die beiden Nationalteams treffen an diesem Donnerstagabend am letzten Spieltag der Gruppe E im Khalifa International Stadium aufeinander. Gewinnt Japan, bräuchte Deutschland ein 8:0 gegen Costa Rica, um noch an den Spaniern vorbeizuziehen.

Update vom 1. Dezember, 16.25 Uhr: Vor dem Achtelfinal-Showdown gibt es im deutschen Team was zu feiern - hoffentlich auch danach. Nico Schlotterbeck feiert an diesem Donnerstag seinen 23ten Geburtstag. Der Innenverteidiger hatte beim WM-Auftakt Deutschlands gegen Japan (1:2) nicht überzeugt. Gegen Spanien wurde er eingewechselt.

„Happy Birthday an einen der dicksten Schädel, auf die ich bisher geprallt bin“, schrieb BVB-Kollege Mats Hummels bei Instagram und spielte auf die Szene an, als beide Dortmunder gegen den VfL Bochum zusammenprallten. Hummels nannte Schlotterbeck „vor allem einen der besten Innenverteidiger der nächsten 10 (vielleicht 12, aber komm du erstmal in das Alter) Jahre“.

Die Lobeshymnen auf den bulligen Angreifer sind nach dem 1:1 (0:0) der deutschen Nationalmannschaft gegen Spanien zumindest überall zu vernehmen. Ein Fan schrieb bei Twitter unter dem Hashtag #füllkrug etwa: „Es lebe der Mittelstürmer mit mehr als 85 kg sowie mehr als 185 cm. Der Füllkrug hat das verdammte Netz zerissen. Bitte @DFB_Team hört auf mit dieser falschen 9 Taktik ... Wir brauchen RICHTIGE NEUNER.“ Was es für ein Weiterkommen brauche, wurde dagegen Ex-Fußballer Sami Khedira in der ARD-Expertenrunde gefragt.

„Füllkrug“, antwortete der Weltmeister von 2014 trocken und direkt zugleich. In derselben Sendung warb Ex-Nationaltorhüterin Almuth Schult regelrecht für einen Startelfeinsatz des neuen deutschen Fanlieblings.

Auch die Experten von MagentaTV pflichteten bei. Lars Stind von Borussia Mönchengladbach erklärte: „Als er reinkam, mit seiner Präsenz, er gibt uns eine andere Note im Spiel. Und wie er sich da durchsetzt in dieser Situation, wie er Jamal Musiala so ein bisschen den Ball wegnimmt und mit Überzeugung den Ball ins lange Eck haut.“
