Munich/Doha – After the match between Iran and the USA (0:1), it is the second politically highly explosive game of this World Cup 2022. At the end of Group G, Serbia and Switzerland meet at Stadium 974 in Doha.

Memories of the 2018 World Cup in Russia are awakened.

Even then, both teams met in what was then the penultimate group game, and even then it was all about qualifying for the World Cup round of 16.

Ultimately, the Swiss won 2-1 with a goal from Xherdan Shaqiri in the 90th minute.

The explosive thing about it: while cheering, the former Bayern player crossed his ladies and stretched out his hands.

He showed the so-called "double-headed eagle" depicted on the flag of Albania.

Xherdan Shaqiri and Granit Xhaka made "double eagle": There is a lot of political explosiveness in the World Cup game

For context: Shaqiri was born in 1991 in Gjilan, in what is now Kosovo.

17 years later, the small Balkan country declared its independence from Serbia, to which it had belonged until then.

To date, not all countries in the world recognize this independence, including Spain, for example.

Shaqiri's Swiss colleague Granit Xhaka (formerly Gladbach) equalized shortly after the break.

The Arsenal player also showed the Serbian fans the "double-headed eagle" after his goal.

Before the game, both players had been provoked and verbally abused by Serbian supporters.

Also explosive: Xhaka's father Ragip was a political prisoner for more than six months in the early 1990s, according to the ARD "Sportschau", when Serbia claimed Kosovo.

"What my father experienced there is something you wouldn't wish on anyone.

To this day, I only know half of this terrible story,” Granit Xhaka once said in an interview.

He himself was born in Switzerland after his parents had previously emigrated.

And currently?

Since mid-2022, Kosovo and Serbia have once again been in a political clinch.

There is a dispute about license plates, passports and conditions for crossing the border.

Even with this game, the World Cup in Qatar (November 20 to December 18) remains a political one.
