The coach of the Belgium national team, Roberto Martins, announced last night (Thursday) that he will retire from the position of head coach of the national team after the expulsion from the World Cup.
The Red Devils were knocked out of the tournament in disappointing fashion after drawing 0-0 with Croatia in their last home game.
Martinez confirmed that it was an 'emotional' moment for him to say goodbye to the role of national coach after six years in charge.
In his press conference after the game, Martinez said: "It was my last game with the national team and it's an emotional moment for me as you can imagine. I always work towards long-term projects and they have to be determined in advance. This was always the plan."
In a tweet from the Belgian FA shortly after the game, they confirmed that Martins had already made the decision to retire before the World Cup.
The Spaniard has coached Belgium since 2016 and during his tenure led them to the semi-finals of the World Cup in 2018 and the quarter-finals of the Euros in 2020.
Belgium needed a win over Croatia to have any chance of progressing in the tournament, but failed to score against the Croatians who advanced to the next stage, where they will meet Japan.
