Brazilian soccer legend Pele, hospitalized in Sao Paulo since Tuesday, said on Saturday he felt "strong and hopeful" as he continues treatment for colon cancer.

“I want to reassure everyone.

I am strong, and hopeful and continuing my treatment as always,” the 82-year-old icon said in an Instagram post illustrated by a medical report released on Saturday describing the former striker's condition as " steady ".

Will this communication be enough to reassure the Brazilians?

The country has been holding its breath since Brazilian media reported that King Pelé had been placed in the palliative care unit of the Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo on Saturday, where he had been admitted earlier this week to treat a respiratory infection.

The triple world champion (1958, 1962 and 1970) would no longer respond to the chemotherapy he had been following since the appearance of his colon cancer in 2021. Which means that he is no longer subject to heavy treatments but only comfort measures to relieve pain or shortness of breath.

A common practice when one is at the end of life.
