These days the health basket committee is sitting and deciding which medicines will go into the next basket, and will be accessible to all Israeli citizens.

How does all this relate to sports?

Through the story of Hanan Maman, who shook an entire country just a year ago.

Maman, one of the most prominent footballers in Israel in the last decade, discovered last year what it's like to be on the side of those who discover that a drug that can change their lives or the lives of those dearest to them is too expensive and not within reach.

His sister Orit got bladder cancer and needed a drug called Padsev, which was not included in the health basket.

Maman started crowdfunding in order to get her the medicine to help her stay alive and overcome the disease.

The entire sports world in Israel was mobilized for the campaign, but cancer defeated Orit.

This month the family marked the anniversary of her death.

"Medications of this type should be open to everyone."

"There was a period of 7 years before Orit died, when the cancer was discovered the first time and the second time, but she managed to overcome," he says, "she was younger then, felt that she was able to overcome even without chemotherapy and tried all kinds of alternative ways. It was successful for a time To a certain extent. The third time the cancer came back, there was no choice anymore, it was more aggressive and spread to more areas. Then they also tried to give the Padsev and saw that it did help, only it turned out that she could not continue taking it because the medicine is very expensive and she has no way to pay for it."

And then you come into the picture.

"I refused and I refuse to take credit, I was just a tool in the whole fundraising story. All in all, I'm happy that I could do something for her that helped - which I couldn't do during the years she suffered from the disease. The reactions to the crowdfunding were crazy, the love and reactions to the fundraising almost made her well without the medicine. It was a crazy time and she and I were surrounded by love and help and it was amazing.

"You don't really know the importance of the health basket until you really need some kind of medicine and discover that it's not as simple as you thought. It's like deciding for someone whether you allow them to live even for another short period of time or you don't allow them, because of a technical detail because you did or you didn't Medical insurance of one kind or another. If you fall ill and you're not insured, you don't exist. Medicines of this type should be open to everyone, period. When it comes to these diseases, you try all kinds of treatments and see what works and what doesn't, and everyone should have the option to try Anything that might help them overcome the disease or receive as a gift precious time to continue living."

"Time is something that can end in an instant"

Maman talks about the last precious time he spent with his sister and its importance to the family: "Orit was an optimistic and strong person and all along she believed in her ability to get well. The first few times she hardly shared with us what she was going through, but the last time we became very close and during the recruitment period we would talk all the time. day and meet almost every day. This time, the fact that she gave us an opening to what she feels and experiences, what stage the disease is in, etc., helped us all feel part of her world and support her.

"When someone close to you passes away, you constantly have thoughts - what else would I say to him , what I would have done, etc. - I am happy that at least this part was spared us and we really took advantage of the time she was alive to say and do everything necessary.

Obviously it's never enough, but this time, this life extension is everything.

We take time for granted, but as someone who has experienced it up close, time is something that can run out in an instant and people can disappear from our radar."

He is not angry, but he has a number to convey to the decision-makers: "It is clear to me that there are people sitting there who take every decision seriously and do not belittle them. For my part, I would explain to them in the most open way that these drugs are people's lives, is there anything more understandable than that? For me, the decision is easy And logically - everyone should have the opportunity to recover or extend their lives as much as possible and that all options should be open to them."

Not an easy deal in itself.

How difficult was it to continue as usual and play this year?

"It's clear that Orit's whole situation affected me, not only in thinking about her, but also in thinking about my parents and how they experience everything that happened and my desire to take away the pain from them. It's on the field that I have the only time to disconnect from everything. Whether it's training or A game, it's absolutely the only time when there are no thoughts except for football, so somehow football really helped me in dealing with this difficult year."

Beyond the tragedy, you personally had a difficult time dealing with an injury.

"It was a difficult year mentally as well as physically because I got injured in one of the games, which put me in a mental and physical turmoil. In the end, you deal with it, consult with whoever you need, take care of what you need and do everything to help your body and mind recover."
