Messi, who made his 1,000th appearance in all competitions this evening, found the back of the net in the 35th minute, giving his team a critical lead.
In doing so, Messi overtook Diego Maradona with his ninth goal in the World Cup.
He is now only one goal away from Gabriel Batistuta, Albiceleste's all-time top scorer.

Messi summed up Argentina's great evening: "We dominated the game and I think we could have decided it even earlier. We suffered towards the end, but Martinez saved us in the final minutes. We made it to the quarter-finals and we are certainly happy but also tired. I am very happy for this victory and another small step forward.
