It took VfB Stuttgart three days to announce a successor: Fabian Wohlgemuth will take over the post of sports director at the Bundesliga club.
The 43-year-old succeeds Sven Mislintat and has a contract until June 30, 2025, as the club announced.
So far, Wohlgemuth worked as a sports director at SC Paderborn in the 2nd Bundesliga.
"With the new appointment to the position of sports director, we want to set both a new impetus and a sign of continuity on our way," said Stuttgart's CEO Alexander Wehrle.
Wohlgemuth "proved in Paderborn that he can put together a valuable squad that plays attacking, passionate football with manageable means.
He also brings with him a great deal of experience in the youth field«.
Born in Berlin, he worked as a youth scout at Hamburger SV and later headed the youth department at VfL Wolfsburg before moving to Holstein Kiel.
In Paderborn, together with coaches Steffen Baumgart and Lukas Kwasniok, he formed a team that is now again one of the promotion candidates in the 2nd Bundesliga.
The Swabians parted ways with Mislintat after several days of talks and around three and a half years of cooperation.
According to the club, the 50-year-old had been presented with a “fair market offer to extend the contract”, which Mislintat had rejected.
One of Wohlgemuth's most urgent tasks will be hiring a new coach.
Most recently, Bruno Labbadia was traded as a top candidate, and interim coach Michael Wimmer has been in charge of the team since October.
Wohlgemuth said about VfB: "It's a lively club with a great fan culture, an exciting team and incredible potential.
At the same time, it is clear that the sporting and economic tasks at VfB will challenge our team spirit.«
»Enable the next step in your career«
For the Paderborners, who, according to the announcement, will receive “appropriate compensation”, Robin Trost will initially take over Wohlgemuth’s duties as head of the license player department.
A solution to the succession plan will be presented "soon".
"He did a very good job in Paderborn and had a strong influence on the sporting development of our club," said Paderborn President Thomas Sagel.
»It is part of the DNA of our club to enable players and employees to take the next step in their careers.
Also because the move to VfB was rewarded accordingly, we part with a good feeling.«
According to »kicker« information, there is a fee of around 600,000 euros in the room.
