All fingers crossed for the "Red Fury" was in vain: Germany hoped for the Iberians, but Japan defeated the Spaniards.

The ticker to read.

  • Spain 1-2 Japan (1-0)

  • Morata's run continues: the goalgetter puts Spain in the lead early on.

  • But Japan comes back with a double whammy.

The second goal was highly controversial.

  • Group finals at the 2022 World Cup: Germany (parallel against Costa Rica) depends on the result of the game.

Spain 1-2 Japan (1-0)

Spain: Unai Simon - Azpilicueta (Carvajal 46), Rodrigo, Pau, Balde (Ansu Fati 68) - Busquets, Gavi (Jordi Alba 68), Pedri, N. Williams (Ferran Torres 57), Dani Olmo - Morata (53. Asensio)

Japan: Gonda - Nagatomo (46th Mitoma), Itakura, Yoshida, Taniguchi - Morita, Ao Tanaka (87th Endo), J. Ito, Kamada (69th Tomiyasu), Kubo (46th Doan) - Maeda (61st Asano )

Goals: 1-0 Morata (11'), 1-1 Doan (48'), 1-2 Tanaka (53')

10:14 p.m .:

Spain, as runners-up in the group, can only meet Brazil in the final and they have the supposedly easier opponent with Morocco compared to Croatia.

Was that a factor that made the Iberians no longer compelling at the end?

Would you rather come second?

10:10 p.m .:

Magenta TV co-commentator Shkodran Mustafi asked during the broadcast to extend the chip in the ball to the goal line.

Then a goal like Japan's might not have been recognised.

10:00 p.m.:

The second goal for Japan will be discussed.

The ball was only a millimeter or less on the line on the cross.

9:56 pm:

The unbelievable happened: Japan defeated Spain and you have to say: It's deserved!

The Asians had the better chances and are rewarded for an energetic performance.

The Samurai Blue are group winners.

Japan defeats Spain: Germany is eliminated

90th + 8 minutes: FINAL WHISTLE!

Japan is through, Spain second.

Germany is out!

90. + 7 minutes:

Gonda catches a long ball.

90th + 6 minutes:

Spain has the ball. Olmo shoots - but misses!

90th + 5 minutes:

The ball was knocked away again.

Japan has now given up any offensive.

90. + 4 minutes:

Japan knocks the ball out.

And now Morita is sitting on the ground, which also takes time.

90. + 3 minutes:

About half of the stoppage time is over.

Throw-in again for Spain in their own half.

90 minutes:

Germany leads 4-2 against Costa Rica.

The DFB-Elf is missing a goal from the Spaniards – even if they no longer “have to”.

There's seven minutes of stoppage time here!

88 minutes:

Olmo!

But he fails from five meters to Gonda!

87 minutes:

Endo comes on for Tanaka.

Spain still safe

85 minutes:

Spain tries, but only the Japanese are still dangerous when they counterattack.

84 minutes:

Japan counters, but is expired.

Meanwhile, Germany is back in the lead!

83 minutes:

Free kick now - but for Japan.

And promptly a header chance by Itakura!

But exactly on Simon.

81 minutes:

The only real chance of the game for Spain is Morata's goal.

Ansu Fati is also unlucky.

79th minute:

Spain wants it, you can tell.

But the ideas are lacking.

Japan defends sacrificially.

77 minutes:

Japan is now lower.

Is the final offensive of the Spaniards now beginning?

At the moment they don't "have to"...

75 minutes:

Spain bites the Japanese from the teeth.

At the moment it doesn't look like the Iberians could crack against these strong Asians.

Japan counters, Spain wobbles - suddenly Spain is out because Costa Rica is leading

74 minutes:

Germany has equalized.

So Spain is back in the round of 16 at the moment.

73 minutes:

The Spaniards know that now too!

You can tell a sudden jolt goes through Luis Enrique's team.

70 minutes:

Japan counters, Spain wobbles.

Meanwhile, Costa Rica takes the lead against Germany!

At the moment Spain is out!

69 minutes:

Japan comes with Tomiyasu for Kamada.

68 minutes:

Change in Spain: Gavi goes down, Jordi Alba is part of the game.

Ansu Fati also replaces Balde.

66 minutes:

Still no good news for the Germans.

Japan continues to annoy the Spaniards - they believe in themselves, you can tell.

Japan suddenly changed

63 minutes:

Japan hasn't had enough, and the counterattacks now look a lot more energetic.

61 minutes:

Japan changes, striker Maeda goes down.

Asano is coming.

60 minutes:

Unbelievable.

Suddenly full of confidence, Japan seems to have saved all their energy for the second half.

59 minutes:

Costa Rica equalized in the parallel game!

58 minutes:

Japan is like a substitute.

The Asians put Spain under pressure very early on.

57 minutes:

Ferran Torres and Asensio come.

Morata and Williams go out.

Japan turns the game against Spain

53 minutes: THE GOAL COUNTS!

It's 2-1 to Japan!

That was incredibly close, but the ball was still a few millimeters off the line when it was crossed!

52 minutes: Goal for Japan!

What's going on here?!

Tanaka heads the ball over the line!

But this time the hit doesn't count!

Or what does the VAR say?

Was this ball out of bounds when Mitoma crossed from the left?

We wait for things!

48 minutes: Doan!

Goal for Japan!

Again, Unai Simon is the starting point for this Japanese offensive action.

The Japanese have apparently identified him as a weak point because they are putting pressure on him.

The keeper inadequately clears the ball to the left, where Doan takes heart from the corner of the box.

He shoots with pelophobia and Simon can no longer deflect the ball decisively!

You can hold it too!

48 minutes:

What risk does Japan take with the new players?

They need a goal, they are currently eliminated.

46 minutes:

Let's continue!

9:01 p.m .:

Three changes at the break: Carvajal comes for Azpilicueta.

Doan and Mitoma come in for Kubo and Nagatomo.

Halftime: deserved lead for Spain

45th + 1 minute: halftime!

Spain deserves to lead.

But apart from the one goal we have seen almost no exciting offensive actions by the favorites.

Japan is defensive and hopes for mistakes - but the Asians haven't had any chances at all.

45.+1 minute:

Just one minute of added time.

And for a long time again a goal approach for Spain.

A corner follows Nico Williams' cross, but it doesn't bring anything either.

45 minutes:

Yoshida also gets a yellow card against Morata - but that was actually a clear swallow from the scorer.

44 minutes:

Taniguchi also sees a yellow card after a foul on Pedri.

43 minutes:

Gavi and Pedri are not factors at all.

Japan covers the two super talents quite well.

41 minutes:

Tanaka appears on the right baseline, but then takes too much time.

The ball is gone.

Spain keeper Unai Emeri almost misses the ball

39 minutes:

Itakura sees the first yellow of the game after boarding in midfield.

If he had caught the ball there instead of the opponent, a counterattack would have been possible.

38 minutes:

In the last few minutes, the Japanese have tasted a little more blood and are running a little higher again.

36 minutes:

Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon takes too much time and almost misses the ball. A murmur goes through the stadium!

It can go that fast...

35 minutes:

Total dominance of the Spaniards - but it hasn't been mandatory for a long time.

And then it's "only" 1-0.

However: The Japanese don't seem particularly keen on powering themselves out on counterattacks either.

32 minutes:

Busquets has injured his right foot and remains down, but can probably continue playing.

30 minutes:

Japan stays put: they don't take big risks.

They choose their moments.

Sure, it takes strength to keep chasing the ball.

Morata checks Gonda but misses the 2-0

27 minutes:

Unusual ball possession by the Japanese in the Iberian half.

But they survive this.

Nevertheless, a small glimmer of hope for Japan, who previously only saw Unai Simon from afar.

23 minutes:

Morata checks Gonda from ten meters while falling, this time the keeper grabs.

22 minutes:

The Spaniards can do whatever they want in midfield and diligently collect possession.

Germany currently has nothing to fear.

In contrast to the first few minutes, little or nothing happens in the Spanish half.

Meanwhile, a Laola wave is sloshing through the stadium.

19 minutes:

Kamada is edited by three Spaniards.

The Japanese seem a bit frustrated offensively.

16 minutes:

Japan continues like this for the time being, leaving the ball to the Spaniards.

The Asians still have a long time to correct the result.

14 minutes:

Germany is second in the group after these two goals.

Morata scores: Spain takes an early lead

11 minutes: Goal!

1-0 for Spain - scorer: Morata!

The goalgetter is completely free on the five and heads a precise Azpilicueta cross into the net from the right!

Shouldn't Gonda have come out?

So the keeper has no chance.

10 minutes:

Germany leads in the parallel game!

9 minutes:

The Japanese leave a decent, courageous impression.

This is not good news for the DFB-Elf.

But one shows his danger right away: Morata beheads a cross into the arms of Gonda.

7 minutes:

Clearly, this will be a game of patience for the Europeans.

Japan supplies the rooms well.

A first attempt - a long-distance attempt by Busquets - is still safe.

But not on the other side!

After a mistake by Busquets, Ito hits the right side netting.

4 minutes:

Lots of possession for the Iberians from the start.

But there are no chances yet.

The Asians are still safe.

2 minutes:

The Japanese start relatively early.

Do we see the aggressive face of the team again today?

1st minute:

The ball rolls!

Update, 6:26 p.m .:

The football associations of Spain and Japan announced a collaboration just hours before their national teams met at the World Cup in Qatar.

This was announced by the Spanish association RFEF after a joint meeting with the association leaders Luis Rubiales and Kohzo Tashima on Thursday in Doha.

The two umbrella organizations had already agreed to cooperate with a handshake in 2020, then the corona pandemic intervened.

Spain wants to promote its candidacy for the 2030 World Cup together with Portugal and Ukraine in the next few years in Asia.

Spain and Japan are planning international matches at different levels and cooperation in women's football and refereeing.

Spain meets Japan: a draw is enough for the 2010 world champion

First report, 6:05 p.m .:

Doha / Munich: Spain is almost further – how much do the Iberians stretch to defeat Japan in the last group game and thus help Germany?

Coach Luis Enrique stressed again that his side would not play for a draw, which would be enough for the 2010 world champions to reach the round of 16.

Although that was a "terrific question", said the head coach of the league leaders at the final press conference in Al-Rajjan, he emphasized: "We want to stay first.

First!”

Spain not aiming for a draw - is Morata playing from the start?

Luis Enrique described some scenarios of how things could go wrong if his team was aiming for a draw.

For example: "If the score is 0-0 in both games in the 90th minute, and in the 95th minute, with 15 seconds to go, Japan and Costa Rica score."

Before the game at the Chalifa International Stadium, Luis Enrique left it open whether Gavi and Rodri will play.

This depends on the final training.

The 18-year-old FC Barcelona playmaker, who was hit in the knee in the 1-1 draw with Germany, and the Manchester City defender had not trained with the team recently.

The Spain coach also left open whether Alvaro Morata would storm from the start this time.

Japan still hopes: “Most important game of career”

Japan also hopes to progress.

"Our performance against Spain can ensure that Japanese football has a very different future," said national team captain Maya Yoshida.

"Probably a lot of children will be watching, so I'm hoping for more World Cup games.

And that's why we have to win," added the veteran.

The Japanese had won 2-1 against Germany at the start, but gambled away the great starting position with a 0-1 draw against Costa Rica.

Yoshida sees the match against Spain as "the most important game of my career".
