In one of his speeches, he voiced slight criticism of the first-choice goalkeeper and DFB team captain Manuel Neuer.

During his show "Lothar lays loose!", the 61-year-old explicitly went into the goalkeeper position.

The German team had conceded five goals in the preliminary round, with some of them Neuer didn't cut the best figure.

"Especially after the last game against Costa Rica, where Neuer didn't look so good twice - he made mistakes that are unknown to him," said Matthäus, criticizing the keeper's recent performances.

When asked about a possible three- or even four-way battle in the German goal, Matthäus said: "I'll go with that immediately, we should use that.

Because you have the quality, you can also try out a ter Stegen, Trapp or Leno in the next few games, give them the opportunity to show over 90 minutes whether you can rely on them.”

Matthäus obviously thinks a lot of the German goalkeepers.

With 30-year-old Marc-André ter Stegen from FC Barcelona and his 32-year-old colleague Kevin Trapp from Eintracht Frankfurt, the DFB provided two goalkeepers in Qatar who would probably have been seeded in other World Cup participants.

“All three are world class.

Even if Manu should drop out, I have no worries with Trapp or Ter Stegen," enthuses the 1990 world champion.

The strong cast in the German goal could now be interesting with a view to the upcoming European Championship in their own country, also because Neuer had already rejected his resignation.

"As long as I'm invited and show my performance, I can rule that out," said the Gelsenkirchener into the TV microphones immediately after the game against Costa Rica.

After the end of the World Cup, competition in the goal is possible before the EM 2024

At the home tournament in 2024, Neuer would be 38 years old, which is actually not an unusual age for a goalkeeper at a European Championship.

It was only in May that he extended his contract with FC Bayern until the summer of 2024, and here, too, there are plans for the longer term with Neuer as the first goalkeeper.

Thus, Neuer probably has a good chance at the European Championships in a year and a half to go into what might be his last major tournament as a regular goalkeeper.

But his younger challengers will already be pawing their hooves, so despite 30 appearances, Marc-André ter Stegen is still waiting for his first appearance at a World Cup or European Championship.

And maybe in the meantime one or the other newcomer will come into focus.
