The last group match between Serbia and Switzerland resulted in several scuffles in the second period. FIFA has opened a

Relations between the Swiss and Serbian teams are more than difficult.

Two Swiss players, Xherdan Shaqiri and Granit Xhaka, are from Kosovo, whose independence declared in 2008 is not recognized by Serbia, which still considers it part of the country.

Four years ago in Russia, the two teams had already faced each other, and both players had scored.

They had celebrated their goals by mimicking the Albanian eagle with their hands.

Albania and Serbia maintain very complicated diplomatic relations, and Kosovo is mainly populated by Albanians.

This Friday, December 2, during the pool match between the two teams, no political signs on the ground, but scuffles still broke out.

In the 65th minute, Granit Xhaka was seen holding his crotch as he looked towards the Serbian bench which sparked the fire.

At the end of the match, the two teams found themselves on the field close to coming to blows.

Words were exchanged, and we saw in particular Breel Embolo very upset, even if he assured that he had not been the victim of racist remarks.

Eventually, tempers calmed down and it was Switzerland who qualified and won the right to face Brazil tonight.

But the main problem came from the supporters.

Indeed, we could hear from the Serbian platform songs calling for violence against the Albanian population.

Twenty minutes before the end of the match, Fifa had launched an appeal to "stop all singing and discriminatory gestures" in the stadium.

Following these incidents, the Fifa Disciplinary Committee decided to open an investigation against the Serbian federation and its supporters.

Serbia could be penalized for breaching Articles 12 (misconduct of players and officials), 13 (discrimination) and 16 (order and security at matches) of its disciplinary code.

She is already under investigation for displaying a Serbian flag containing Kosovo in her dressing room before her match against Brazil on 24 November.
