Rugby: England coach Eddie Jones sacked

2022-12-06T11:57:19.723Z

Ten months from the World Cup, the RFU thanked the Australian. The name of his successor will be revealed “in the near future”.

The announcement had been expected for a few days.

It was formalized this Tuesday noon by the English Federation (RFU).

Eddie Jones has been fired from his post as England coach, which he has held since early 2016.

That rare fan reaction to a comprehensive 27-13 loss to a weakened South Africa - and Jones' subsequent comment that he didn't care what others thought - appears to have been the final straw for the anonymous panel who sat down to review the Tests, which also included a loss to Argentina, a draw against New Zealand and a win over Japan.

"

Following the Autumn Nations Series test review, Eddie Jones has been removed from his role as England head coach

," the RFU said in a statement.

A November tour that saw the XV of the Rose lose at Twickenham against Argentina (a first) and South Africa, snatching a miraculous draw against the All Blacks.

For only one small victory, against Japan.

In total, England have won just five of their 12 matches in 2022, including a Six Nations Tournament where they lost three of their five matches for the second year in a row.

Eddie Jones, 62, who led England to the 2019 World Cup final, was increasingly challenged.

By the media and fans.

But also internally, by its players, according to several British journalists.

The highest paid coach in the world, the Australian was under contract until the end of the 2023 World Cup in France.

However, the name of his successor has not been revealed.

Expected, New Zealander Warren Gatland signed up with Wales on Monday, for a homecoming.

The name of Steve Borthwick, the manager of Leicester, was put forward insistently.

It has not been confirmed at this time.

The RFU will conclude the long-term work it has undertaken on coaching succession planning with changes expected to be announced in the near future.

In the meantime, the interim will be provided by Richard Cockerill who will take charge of the day-to-day management of the team.
