Will Hansi Flick remain national coach after Germany's embarrassment at the 2022 World Cup?

The possible successor candidates at a glance.

Doha – "It's fun for me," said Hansi Flick after the German national team's preliminary round at the 2022 World Cup.

“From my side there is no reason not to continue.

We have good players coming up, it won't be my fault.

Anyone who knows me knows that we work through it very quickly.

Then we'll see what the future brings."

Hansi Flick

Born: February 24, 1965 (age 57), Heidelberg

Current job: national coach

Contract until: 07/31/2024

Previous positions: Germany (since 2021; assistant coach from 2006-2014) FC Bayern (2019-2021)

World Cup 2022: Flick wants to continue - will the DFB let him?

Flick only spoke superficially of self-criticism after the World Cup debacle.

"That's something we discuss internally in our analysis.

I am always someone who is very critical.

That will be included in the analysis.” Germany was also unable to save a 4-2 win over Costa Rica because Japan defeated Spain 2-1 in the parallel game.

The German team even fell behind at times by 1:2.

The end began in the first game with the 1:2 defeat against Japan, against Spain they only managed a 1:1 despite an appealing performance.

The fact that the DFB team had a real chance of progressing before the last matchday was only thanks to Costa Rica's surprising victory over Japan.

Ballack puts his finger in the DFB wound after the World Cup - and questions Hansi Flick

German football made a fool of itself at this World Cup in Qatar.

Of course, after the failure, the future of national coach Hansi Flick will also be discussed.

There shouldn't and mustn't be a simple "keep it up," agrees MagentaTV expert Michael Ballack, who tears the DFB team apart.

"Now it's about turning every stone, in terms of content.

Also at the DFB.

And not to make the same mistake as in 2018.

When the President stood up shortly after leaving and said: The DFB and its coaching team are analyzing this now and then Jogi will continue," Ballack said after and made it clear after the World Cup debacle: "It is part of the DFB that every position is questioned.

The coach is part of that too.” Should Germany actually throw Flick out the door, the question of his successor also arises.

We list some candidates, actually there are only two possibilities:

WM-Aus: Thomas Tuchel as Flick's successor - ex-Chelsea coach is free of charge

The native Swabian would be available.

After his dismissal at Chelsea in early September, with whom he won the Champions League in 2021, Thomas Tuchel is waiting for a new challenge.

Flick before lightning farewell to the DFB?

Latest statement speaks volumes

After stints in the Bundesliga in Mainz and Dortmund and at the top international clubs Paris St. Germain and Chelsea, the job as national coach and Flick successor after the DFB team were eliminated from the World Cup in Qatar came at the right time for the 49-year-old.

Tuchel's advantage: The DFB traditionally does not want to pay a fee for coaches.

However, Tuchel is considered a combative character and never lasted very long with an employer.

Jürgen Klopp as Flick's successor: Liverpool coach is the dream of many Germans

The dream of many Germans and after the World Cup from the German national team probably even more so.

Jürgen Klopp could bring back the lost connection with the German national team to the fans in the country and spark euphoria with his emotional nature before the 2024 European Championships in Germany.

In Dortmund and Liverpool, the 55-year-old has proven that he can form a conspiratorial bunch.

Can Kloppo also do it in the DFB team?

The problem: Klopp only extended his contract in Liverpool until 2026 in the spring of this year.

It is hard to imagine that the DFB can and wants to release him from this relationship.

In addition, taking office would probably not be possible until summer at the earliest, since Klopp is unlikely to turn his back on his Reds in the middle of the season.

Then an interim solution would be necessary.

Rudi Völler as Flick's successor: The Germans' favorite has already stepped in

Another favorite of the Germans could act as an interim coach.

"Aunt Käthe", better known as Rudi Völler, would not help out for the first time in the German national team.

In the year 2000, the world champion from 1990 was supposed to keep the national coach's chair warm for Christoph Daum.

After his cocaine affair, Völler stayed four years.

In 2002 he led Germany to second place in the world championship, after the preliminary round at the EM 2004 it was over.

Voller would be available like Tuchel.

It was only last summer that he more or less retired after many years at Bayer Leverkusen, most recently as managing director.

The 62-year-old could take over the scepter in the DFB team until the home European Championship in 2024 and then possibly hand it over to Klopp.

That's what the DFB stars from the summer fairy tale of 2006 are doing today

Jupp Heynckes as Flick's successor: Germany's national coach would be the crowning glory

Don Jupp has achieved everything in his coaching career.

Champions League winners with Real Madrid, treble winners with FC Bayern – more is not possible.

The only thing missing is a big success with the national team.

Heynckes has already helped out when the need was great.

In the 2017/18 season he stepped in at Bayern and still won the championship.

However, it is questionable whether the Mönchengladbach native will be looking for the big stage again at the age of 77.

As a national coach, however, he would be far less in the spotlight than as a club coach.

Maybe Heynckes will take Bond coach Louis van Gaal as an example, who at the age of 71 is the oldest coach at the 2022 World Cup.

Bastian Schweinsteiger as Flick's successor: 2014 world champion knows the German weaknesses

After the Germany game, the world champion put his former assistant coach through the wringer.

Schweinsteiger dismantled the DFB selection live on TV and, unlike Flick, seemed to have answers to the German debacle as a World Cup expert in the ARD studio.

The national coach does not.

As the leader of the 2014 World Cup, Bastian Schweinsteiger would be immediately respected and recognized within the team.

The former midfield strategist undoubtedly brings the technical qualities with him, only experience as a coach could be lacking.

The only question is whether the 38-year-old would want to swap his carefree life as a private individual, husband and father for the role of national coach, who is often under fire.

Can Flick continue after the World Cup debacle?

As a result, the DFB does not have many alternatives as a successor to Hansi Flick.

A hasty shot is not to be expected.

It can be assumed that the World Cup debacle will be objectively processed and Flick will be allowed to remain national coach.

A change just a year and a half before the home European Championship in 2024 would come as a surprise despite all the omissions.

Only seconds after the World Cup, however, Thomas Müller indicated his retirement with an emotional speech.
