Hansi Flick remains national coach and leads Germany to the EM 2024 in his own country.

Hopefully he can then also count on the German fans.

A comment.

Munich – December 7, 2022 and all of Germany is discussing whether Hansi Flick will continue to be our national coach.

In another world we would get in the mood for the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup and discuss who should be in the DFB starting XI.

Would talk shop about how to crack the next opponent - be it Brazil or Portugal.

We would agree where we could watch this game together.

The curious thing is: this world wasn't that far away.

Hans-Dieter "Hansi" Flick

Born: February 24, 1965 (age 57), Heidelberg

Spouse: Silke Flick

National coach since August 1, 2021

Germany are eliminated from the World Cup early – because we didn't have a pinball machine this time?

It was clear that after the second exit in a World Cup preliminary round, everyone would crawl out of their holes.

Here they come, the ex-ex-ex-European champions, the long-time TV experts and they hit German football wherever they can.

And not just them.

82 million national coaches are also keen to criticize this national team, because that is what is currently popular from a sporting or socio-political point of view.

We don't have a nine, we have to turn every stone now because we're so bad.

As a reminder: When Germany had a real nine with Mario Gomez, for example, that wasn't enough for you either.

He has "bed sore" himself, the "Flipper".

The not so old opinion about the real nine?

We don't need it, it's completely out of fashion.

We all wanted to be like the Spaniards or Barcelona, who didn't have this 1.90 meter center forward at the time and where they were still very successful.

Germany had the most shots on goal and an xG value of ten in the preliminary round

And now the lack of a center forward is the big problem that the DFB seems to have – we don't train nines, we fail at the base, yeah yeah yeah.

These are discussions that can be had.

But one thing is for sure, Germany isn't eliminated because we're fundamentally bad and we generally only bring eleven blind people to the field.

Any evidence for that?

Germany had the most shots on goal of all 32 participants in the preliminary round.

There were 69 in the end.

The DFB selection had an expected goal value of ten in the group phase.

In the end, Germany only scored six goals.

Key statement of the statistics: If Germany had used its chances as one would expect, it would have reached the round of 16 as the group leader with seven points.

Germany at the 2022 World Cup not only with inability, but also bad luck

Another horrible evaluation: aluminum hit.

Against Costa Rica, the Germans banged the ball three times against the timbers within six minutes, and they failed five times in the tournament against the crossbar or post.

More than everyone else.

And that's ultimately a big statement from this World Cup: we didn't get eliminated because we suddenly couldn't play anymore, because we discussed a lot about a captain's armband or because the families spent too much time in the players' hotel.

Germany is now a World Cup spectator because in certain situations it wasn't enough by a few centimetres.

This is soccer.

TV schedule for the 2022 World Cup: When and where will the quarter-finals be shown?

Of around 300 minutes that Germany played at this World Cup, a total of 30 were bad.

And there's nothing to sugarcoat: That was really, really bad.

The two goals conceded by Japan are still nightmares for some involved.

The short slumber against Costa Rica also caused the fans to go into shock.

But otherwise, in a strong group, it was at least okay enough that it could have been enough to advance.

When we became world champions in 2014, the team was literally torn apart after the shattering victory in the round of 16 against underdog Algeria.

There are such phases in a tournament.

And this time again with a bad ending for Germany and of course it has to be talked about.

However, a clear distinction must be made: Not everything is so bad

Hansi Flick is the right national coach, but he still has lessons to learn

The World Cup is history, we can't go back.

And that's why we finally have to look ahead, together with Hansi Flick.

This man was idolized two years ago, statues were almost planned for him, suddenly every remotely successful football club in Europe was said to want Flick as a coach.

And now there is serious discussion about whether this man is the right one for the DFB?

When he took up his post, Fußball-Deutschland was satisfied, the results were right.

The role of a national coach is predestined for Flick.

He can manage, is empathetic, understands football and the footballer.

He himself knows that he made mistakes at the World Cup: sticking to old hierarchies, breaking his own game to satisfy substitute players with minutes of play, deciding against players who were ready to start.

For this he was punished in the most bitter way and from this he draws his lessons.

Germany, finally stop whining and look to the future together with Hansi Flick

What is needed now is unity.

Getting back up from failure is greatness.

The new appointment to the Bierhoff position is intended to set the course for what is right and important.

After all, a European Championship in your own country is just around the corner.

And then not only the German Football Association is the host, but the entire republic.

Until then, a football euphoria has to be rekindled in order to be able to celebrate a summer fairy tale again.

That's only possible if our boys are supported in the way that other nations are doing and we're now having to watch enviously in the quarter-finals.

It's difficult to dictate something to us, because we are the great moral world champions and know so many things so much better.

But please: Germany, finally stop whining and look to the future together with Hansi Flick.
