New TV rights for the Champions League: DAZN gets involved, competitor only receives a fraction

The Champions League is celebrating its comeback in mid-February.

After the extended winter break due to the 2022 World Cup, the round of 16 will take place in spring.

FC Bayern Munich meets Paris St. Germain in the CL cracker.

In contrast to the majority of World Cup games, all fans then need a paid subscription to be able to follow the Champions League.

Champions League: DAZN acquires most of the broadcasting rights

DAZN and Amazon will share the transmission rights in Germany until the 2023/24 season.

While the streaming provider DAZN broadcasts the majority of the games live and exclusively, Amazon owns the rights for the top game on the Tuesday of the respective game day.

It stays that way for now.

Because DAZN will remain the TV provider with the most Champions League games in Germany in the long term.

According to information from the German Press Agency, the streaming service has agreed on a new contract with the European Football Union (UEFA) and is allowed to broadcast 186 games in each of the three seasons starting in 2024/25.

DAZN did not want to comment on Wednesday.

Champions League: Amazon retains rights to top games

Amazon had previously confirmed that there was a new contract.

The contract between the US company and UEFA, negotiated by the Team Marketing agency, includes 17 games per season in the reformed premier class for the German market.

According to the contract, Prime Video has the first right of access when selecting the game and broadcasts it exclusively.

All other games are running - as in this and the coming season - on DAZN.

The pay provider Sky, for many years the largest Champions League broadcaster in Germany, went out again empty-handed.

Champions League: New mode from 2024

From the 2024/25 season, the Champions League will be played in a completely different format.

In the future, not 32, but 36 teams will take part in the European premier class.

The previously usual group mode will also no longer exist.

All teams then play in a common league.

Each team has eight games against different teams in this league, the clubs are divided into four different seeding pots beforehand.

The top eight then automatically qualify for the round of 16, while places ninth to 24 play out the remaining knockout participants.

Champions League: 225 instead of 125 games from 2024

As a result of the reform, there will be significantly more CL games in the future.

Instead of the previous 125 games, there will be a whopping 100 more games from 2024.

According to the new contract, 208 will be transmitted by DAZN and the remaining 17 by Amazon.
