The German Football League (DFL) separates from the controversial managing director Donata Hopfen at the instigation of the supervisory board boss Hans-Joachim Watzke.

Two men will follow her on an interim basis.

Munich/Frankfurt am Main – Hans-Joachim Watzke continues to take merciless action in German football.

At the instigation of the DFL supervisory board boss, the previous boss of the German Football League, Donata Hopfen, has to go.

The managing director of the interest group of the Bundesliga has to vacate her job after less than a year.

This is the result of a supervisory board meeting on Wednesday, which the DFL announced in the evening.

According to media reports, the club managers Axel Hellmann (Eintracht Frankfurt) and Oliver Leki (SC Freiburg) will initially lead the professional association on an interim basis until the hop successor is settled.

However, there was no confirmation of this on Wednesday.

The 46-year-old Hopfen succeeded long-time boss Christian Seifert as CEO on January 1. The former management consultant's contract originally ran until the end of 2024. The commitment must now be seen as a misunderstanding.

Large parts of the DFL committees and the 36 professional clubs were dissatisfied with Hopfen's work.

Both officials speak for their good club work.

Both the Sport-Club and Eintracht stand for sporting success and sound management.

DFL and DFB: "Aki" Watzke takes a harder course in German football

In the past few days it had been indicated that DFL boss Watzke would take a tougher course in German football.

As managing director of BVB, vice-president of the DFB, head of the supervisory board of the DFL and delegate of the DFB to the European football association Uefa, the 63-year-old is currently the most influential person in German football.

On the same day, Watzke was also involved in the DFB crisis summit, at which Hansi Flick was confirmed as national coach despite the World Cup disaster.

Before that, however, DFB manager Oliver Bierhoff had to go, the former national player anticipated a possible dismissal by resigning.
