Will the Israeli swimming team fly to the World Championships without a coach? | Israel today

2022-12-08T12:40:19.877Z

24 hours before the flight to Melbourne, coach Dima Rybinsky announced that he could not fly and now, the athletes may find themselves alone in Australia

The Israeli swimming team will take off today (Thursday) for the World Championships in short pools (25 meters), all the way to Melbourne, Australia as of now without a coach.

The reason?

The delegation, which includes veteran Yaakov Tomarkin and Miron Hirauti, was supposed to leave first with coach Dima Rybinsky, but he announced that he could not fly to prepare for the Israeli championship, and yesterday, less than 24 hours before the flight, the swimmers received the news.

Since Rybinski's announcement, the union worked hard to find a replacement, when in the end, it was decided to expel David Gamborg, but as of this moment he still has not received a visa.

It should be remembered that although this is not a target competition for the Israeli swimmers and therefore most of the swimmers, including the European champion Anastasia Gorbenko do not take part in it, it is still a world championship, when such a decision can harm their preparations.

In the last championship, last year in Abu Dhabi, Tomarkin advanced to the final of the 200 meter individual medley and finished in seventh place.

Due to the constraints of the corona virus and the postponement of competitions, within one year, there will be no less than three world championships, when in addition to the one that is coming in Australia, the world championship in long pools will be held in Japan this July and in February 2024 the world championship will be held in Doha, Qatar.

The swimming association's response: "Dima Rybinski was supposed to coach Dima Rybinsky for the World Short Course Championships that will open next week in Melbourne, but unfortunately at the last minute he was unable to compete. From the moment this became known, David Gamborg, who is currently on the team's coaching staff, was immediately appointed coach in his place. The visa for Gamborg will be accepted in the coming days and he will lead the swimmers in the competition. On this occasion we wish Jacob and Miron the best of luck."
