VfL Wolfsburg has taken a big step towards the quarter-finals of the women's Champions League.
In the fourth group game, the Wolves won 4-1 (2-1) in their own stadium against AS Roma, for which Andressa Alves (42nd minute) and Sophie Roman Haug (76th) scored.
The VfL goals were scored by Ewa Pajor (24', 53'), Sveindí's Jane Jónsdóttir (40') and Lena Lattwein (52').
With ten points after four games, Wolfsburg can only be pushed out of the top two places in Group B if SKN St. Pölten wins against Slavia Prague late in the evening.
For VfL it would be the eleventh quarter-finals in a row.
The team is currently in excellent shape: in the Bundesliga, the DFB Cup and the Champions League group stage, the Wolfsburg team have only drawn one game so far, otherwise only wins.
The hostesses started rather shakily and gave the Romans some good attacks.
Two successful moves down the left wing were enough for a lead at the break.
First Jónsdóttir pushed through Elisa Bartoli and just about scratched a cross from the baseline into the center, where Pajor went unprotected with a header to make it 1-0 (24th).
At the next chance on the left, Jónsdóttir shot high into the short angle himself (40th).
But before the break it was 2-1 because Lattwein played a poor pass into Andressa's foot in the build-up game.
The Brazilian didn't hesitate and took a shot from just behind the center circle – the ball came too high for Germany goalkeeper Merle Frohms and fell into the goal behind her (42').
Double strike after the restart
The game was just getting going again when Wolfsburg made it 3-1 when Lattwein stopped in the fray after a corner and made up for her mistake before half-time (52').
And just a minute later, Pajor scored her second goal, again with a header from a cross from Svenja Huth (53').
Despite the three-goal deficit, Rome became dangerous again.
Frohms had to save briefly in a one-on-one against Emilie Bosshard Haavi (56th) and again against Annamaria Serturini in the 72nd minute.
When the latter crossed to the second post from the left a little later, Frohms was powerless when Haug headed the ball (76').
The 2:4 came too late, AS Roma couldn't get close.
