For decades he was the quiet man in the background.

Now the legendary assistant coach Peter Hermann has to stop for health reasons.

Dortmund/Munich – The eternal assistant coach of the Bundesliga resigns.

Peter Hermann worked for about 45 years as a player coach, interim coach and especially as an assistant. Now, at the age of 70, he is forced to give up his job.

The long-time Bayern assistant coach Hermann made a name for himself at clubs all over Germany, and his career is now ending in Dortmund.

Peter Herman

Born: March 22, 1952 in Kleinmaischeid

Professional stations: Bayer Leverkusen, Alemannia Aachen, HSV, among others

Last club: Borussia Dortmund

At FC Bayern: from 2011 to 2013 and from 2017 to 2019

Peter Hermann ended his long career "due to poor health".

On Wednesday, Borussia Dortmund announced in a statement that they had parted ways with Hermann by mutual agreement.

“Peter has asked us for his release for health reasons.

It goes without saying that we have complied with his request,” said BVB sporting director Sebastian Kehl.

Last summer in Dortmund they were "extremely happy" about the new addition to the coaching team, "that Peter - although his personal life plans did not envisage this at the time - decided for another year in professional football and for BVB".

Now Hermann has to resign before the end of the season.

Peter Hermann: He got the treble at FC Bayern with Jupp Heynckes

The 70-year-old, whom Kehl describes as an "experienced, technically excellent trainer, but also a great person", was routine and professional competence personified.

He was on the sidelines in more than 1000 games, the most successful was his time at FC Bayern, when he got the treble between 2011 and 2013 in the coaching team of Jupp Heynckes.

During Heynckes' last term in office, Hermann moved to Munich a second time - even for a fee - and stayed after the coaching legend left to join Niko Kovac's team for a year.

All in all, Hermann won three championships during his time in Munich and won the DFB Cup twice.

Hermann spent most of his time in Leverkusen as an assistant coach, but he was also employed as a scout and as head coach of the second deputy, which has since been scrapped.

During his long career, Hermann was also an assistant at 1. FC Nürnberg, Hamburger SV, Fortuna Düsseldorf and in the DFB youth team, plus two terms at FC Schalke 04. He was also a consultant for his former club Alemannia Aachen for more than two years .

Peter Hermann with emotional words at the end of his career: "Of course, health always comes first"

Hermann himself also made an emotional statement about the sudden end of his career.

"Unfortunately, I'm not allowed to work longer for Borussia Dortmund, because of course health always comes first.

From now on, I will be keeping my fingers crossed for BVB from a distance in all three competitions," said the UEFA Pro license holder.

BVB will probably present a successor in the coming weeks.
