Israel's women's goalball team opened its participation in the World Championship in Portugal today (Friday) with victories over Egypt and Great Britain in the group stage.
The Blue and Whites achieved an easy 0:10 against the southern neighbor, with one of the ten goals being by the young Noa Malka, the first she has ever scored in an international competition.
Later, the team won with Great Britain with a score of 3:8.
The next match (tomorrow) is against the USA, and later against Japan, Brazil, Australia and Portugal. The team is made up of players from Beit Halochem Tel Aviv and the branches of a blind school and includes the captain Gal Hamrani, Ilham Mahmid Rozin, Lihya Ben David, Roni Ohion, Uri Mizrahi and Noa Malka, and Gal's two guide dogs Dylan and Roni's Rudy. The coach is Raz Shoham, the assistant coaches - Eran Reik and Nizar Mahagana.
Goalball is for the blind and visually impaired.
During the competition, the athletes play blindfolded in order to compare their level of blindness, when they identify the location of the goal by markings on the field, and the location of the ball by the bells inside.
