Our rabbi is suspended: Darren Hilliard broke the deceptive silence in the temple - voila! sport

2022-12-09T08:51:01.577Z

The energies around were off, the management's fears created an atmosphere of underdogs and the heads of the club do not dare to tell themselves the truth. Ketch will have to bring Hilliard and Hollins into the new equation

Tiktuknu: Summary of the day in sports, 9.12 (Sport1)

1. Do you even want to win?

At the first working meeting of the new professional team at Maccabi Tel Aviv, sometime at the beginning of the summer, a goal for the upcoming season was placed on the agenda.

Not returning the championship, nor winning the cup;

Not reaching the Final Four, not even advancing to the Euroleague playoffs.

Even before that, David Blatt put a point on the map: if there's a player that Bull doesn't hit with (and when you sign eight or nine new foreigners, the odds of 100 percent success aren't exactly in your favor), he explained, we should avoid the old situation that was talked about in the media and among the fans And within the club about this camp that is responsible for signing him, or about that manager who forced him, or about the coach who insisted on him.

Enough of division, enough of slander - Blatt would surely have said, if only he had stood on a stage in an election speech, and would have been met with thunderous applause.

It is difficult to assess whether Maccabi will meet its professional goals for this season;

Will you regain the championship, or at least win the trophy?

Maybe you'll make it to the Final Four, or just make it to the EuroLeague playoffs?

One thing is becoming clearer and clearer - the somewhat naive goal presented by Blatt is already a failure.

With only a third of the European way behind her, it's clear that camping inside the club hasn't gone away.

It seems that she just went, got stronger and messed up.

The leaks and rumors regarding the coach's status, the daily or nightly discussions about his employment status (the neon signs at Shimon Mizrahi's law firm, their situation?), the question of who is to blame in the Darren Hilliard issue and the virtual outrage on social media - all of these created a disproportionate and above all senseless atmosphere around the team.

Where do the yellows expect her to lead them?

It works roughly like this: if Oded Ketch beats Valencia, he is a good coach;

But if he loses in Milan and Bologna, he may be fired;

And even if he wins one of them, but then surrenders to Alba Berlin, he should retire and never believe again.

After nine coaches in eight years, at least eight of which were failures - we can safely say that this is just the way it is.

That's how it works in Eliyahu's hand.

When you look at this equation from the side, and squint at the professional manager, and the head of the scouting system, and the owner, and the son of the owner, it's hard not to wonder: what do they really want to happen?

Are they interested in a victory on the floor that will bring peace and stability to the system?

Or maybe they are just waiting for an excuse to turn them into their usual conditioned reflex?

And maybe they are wondering among themselves - if we once again brought in a bad or unsuitable coach, and it is clear that we have to replace him - why should we harm ourselves and wait for the next loss?

One thing they certainly don't think about;

That those who appointed this coach, and the one before him, and the seven before them, and were so unsuccessful in this task, are not qualified to appoint the ideal coach.

I mean, if there are managers who succeed time and time again (time after time) in making a mistake in choosing the coach, they probably don't manage that well.

2. The opportunity behind the shutdown

But yesterday Maccabi Tel Aviv beat Valencia, so everything seems to be fine.

Allegedly, allegingly.

In a manner not inseparable from the recent events, the magnetizing atmosphere of Yad Eliyahu benefited, and was far from reminding of the madness that reigned in the hall only recently, during the victories over Monaco and Olympiakos.

Something got tired in the audience, and it provides a mirror image of what the club broadcasts.

The shutdown of Alex Poythers disrupts Ketch's plans, which were already disrupted in the recent period.

The American center (due to the hand injury or not) did not find himself in the places where his coach placed him, and made a minimal contribution compared to the early expectations of him;

This situation led to different and different compositions, successful and much less successful;

And especially for a feeling of imbalance in everything related to the front line.

In the Maccabibul podcast this week, they presented a statistic that illustrates this best of all: this season's Yellows are ranked 507th among 512 teams in the 23-year Euroleague in defensive rebound efficiency.

Therefore, the deactivation of Poithers also contains a kind of opportunity.

To solve the staff problems, Maccabi Tel Aviv will need two or three exchanges, which it does not have the luxury of making.

But even one change can improve the situation.

And even before the matters of personalization, it was interesting to see how the coach would react to the new situation with the players he already has.

Roman Sorkin, who took over the power forward position until last week, returned to the center slot - which he shared throughout most of the game with Josh Niebo.

The two were hardly seen together on the field, and Ketch has yet to find the target player in the number 4 position: he started with the insecure Jarl Martin, who performed correct actions and reached comfortable shots, but missed them one after another;

The one who came off the bench and pleasantly surprised - at least for one evening, against one of the weakest forward lines in the Euroleague - was Jake Cohen;

Bonzie Coulson also got some minutes as a second-high.

Conclusions for the double cycle next week?

None, maybe except that Maccabi should speed up the search for a new player.

Made the right moves and hit comfortable shots, but still can't find himself.

3. Austin Power

"I'm sad and miss my friends", was the inscription that emerged from Hilliard's shirt when he arrived at the game - and it seems that the man fell in love with the vague messages he was trying to convey.

But if there is one who managed to light the rabba yesterday, it is him.

Some fans demonstratively encouraged him to perhaps send a message to Ketch, and others recognized a proven and well-known player in distress - so they came to his aid, and the man produced a record performance in a season in which he is so far from the record.

In his three previous games at Yad Eliyahu, Hilliard scored only ten points, and yesterday he had 11. He had three field baskets until last night at home (from 11 shots), and this time he added four (from five attempts).

The optimists will see this as a sign of things to come, and it is not certain that they are right, but in light of Wade Baldwin's injury, Maccabi Tel Aviv will be forced to shuffle their cards again in the guard position as well.

So yes, Lorenzo Brown will continue to play 30 minutes (in three quarters) at least;

And no, Jaylen Adams will not be suspended and dried again like yesterday (in the first place it is not clear why, after his excellent offensive display in Munich);

And yes, from now on Hilliard must also be part of this equation.

Too many players don't give their best.

And there is another one, who, regardless of the injured, the missing and the displaced, proves his necessity on the floor every time: Austin Hollins is the type of player who does not stay in Eliyahu's hands for long.

He will never be a star at Maccabi, and probably won't have the status he had at Red Star Belgrade and Zenit St. Petersburg, but whenever he gets a chance and isn't forgotten by Ketch on the bench (that is, except for the last nine seconds in Belgrade), good things happen to the team .

Also in the attack - and especially in the defense, which receives a boost from Hassel, desire and commitment.

To make it through the three-game road streak in the next two weeks, Ketch will have to immediately solve his most acute problem of the season: too many players (that is, everyone who is not Brown, Baldwin, Sorkin and John DiBartholomew) are not giving their best under the coach.

His most important challenge will be to make sure that the oil signs discovered by Hilliard and Hollins - and also Adams last week - do not turn out to be a one-off episode.
