Tölzer Löwen beat Weiden to a 3:4 aet after conceding three goals within two minutes and catching up from a 1:3 deficit.
Weiden/Bad Tölz – Remarkable success for the Tölzer Löwen: With a mostly good performance, they got a point from Oberliga leaders Blue Devils Weiden.
Thanks to a strong defense and a well-disposed Josef Hölzl in goal, they delivered a duel at eye level with the league leaders on Friday evening.
They survived the first period unscathed, even going ahead five minutes outnumbered and coming back into the game after conceding three goals and falling 3-1 in less than two minutes.
They deservedly equalized and saved themselves in extra time, which an outstanding Chad Bassen decided in favor of the hosts after 50 seconds.
"I'm happy with the point," says coach Ryan Foster.
A drop of bitterness: Max Brandl was injured again in his second game after an injury break.
Respectable success at the leader Weiden
After all, the Tölzers used the majority during the five-minute penalty against Gläser for a somewhat surprising opening goal by Ludwig Nirschl.
Dillon Eichstadt even had the chance to make it 2-0 with a solo effort in the following four-minute outnumbered Tölzer.
But Weiden's keeper Jaroslav Hübl was also in a good mood that day.
High speed and a lot of pressure cause problems
The leader had the better and more chances.
However, he also failed with a penalty on Hölzl.
"We initially struggled with the high pace and a lot of pressure," says Foster.
But the saved penalty and their own lead brought the Tölzer back into play.
Three attacks, three goals conceded
However, the game seemed to take the expected course after the first change: Weiden needed three attacks – not even in the majority – to completely turn the game around.
Bassen used a rebound to equalize, Thomas Rubes increased it to 2:1 with a dream goal when he misused the Tölz defenders as slalom poles and welded in the disc halfway up on the left.
And Neal Samanski humorlessly nailed the puck to the top right corner.
Foster: “We wanted to turn off the goals conceded.
Even if we didn't manage to do that in this phase, we're on the right track," says the lion coach.
"We played well for 57 minutes."
Worked back into game
Because after a short mouth wipe, the lions reported back.
Nirschl deflected Tyler Ward's shot from the air to make it 2-3.
And Felix Ribarik, who played against his brother Lukas in the Weiden jersey for the first time, completed a solo effort to equalize.
"A work gate," says Foster.
Neither team took advantage of the chances they had to score the winning goal.
But the draw in regular time was well deserved, both coaches agreed.
Bassen used a 2-1 situation to decide in extra time.
