Béla Réthy and his last game: ZDF reporter comments on farewell France against Morocco
It was already clear before the tournament that the now 65-year-old would retire after the 2022 World Cup.
From 1996 to 2018, Réthy commented on all finals of the World and European Championships broadcast by ZDF.
Born in Vienna, he has been a reporter at ten World Cups since 1986.
And yet he still experienced things in this winter World Cup that he had never seen before - for example that the spectators poured out of the stadium in droves at the opening game.
Réthy is criticized by many fans, but celebrated by experts and colleagues.
In the end, he always stayed true to his style.
At the end of his great career he will commentate on the World Cup semi-final between France and Morocco.
After the game on Wednesday evening (8 p.m. / ZDF), he then puts the microphone aside.

"I have the feeling that it's the same hysteria, whether the postman doesn't come for two days or a nuclear power plant goes off," he continues.
A few days ago, Réthy also explained in the podcast "Die Wochentester" (Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger/RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland) that he does not believe in a summer fairy tale at the home European Championship 2024, like Germany experienced at the 2006 World Cup.
“We are very divided, very negative.
In 2006 Germany was a different country, more relaxed, more tolerant.
Not so dogmatic.
