Anyone who regularly passes the countless football pitches in the district has long known that sport and exercise no longer play a major role for many - probably most - children and young people.
Of course, sports are still played in clubs – but most children and young people are not in sports clubs.
And that's why the study by the DAK health insurance fund is conclusive, which says: Two thirds of all school children move too little.
On average, girls and boys in grades five to ten spend more than twelve hours a day sitting.
That is shocking.
The health consequences are as well known as they are serious: the risk of weight problems increases, as does postural damage and coordination difficulties.
That is why the new sports elementary school model is pointing in the right direction.
Our children need to move more.
In the district of Munich, elementary schools in Unterbiberg, Haar and Garching are finally attaching more importance to sport.
Targeted activities or excursions are intended to introduce the children to various sports.
And - a little thing with a big effect: During the breaks, the sports facilities at the Unterbiberg elementary school can be used by the pupils.
This awakens the desire for games and sports even after class!
However: The sports elementary school is just a start – nothing more.
