The TSV 1860 starts the winter preparations without captain Stefan Lex. The reason: a lumbago.

The offensive player, however, leaves the end of his career open.

Munich

– sun, powder snow and in the background an alpine hut made of rustic old wood.

The club grounds of TSV 1860 fulfilled the usual alpine clichés on Monday, but it wasn't the snow lions around Linus Straßer who entered the training ground when the temperatures were below zero, but the footballers from the 3rd league who had just basked on the world's dream beaches.

The first unit of the winter preparations lasted 90 minutes, during which Michael Köllner saw a largely full row.

Only the convalescents Semi Belkahia (knee) and Milos Cocic (foot) were missing on the snow-free lawn - and captain Stefan Lex, for initially unknown reasons.

TSV 1860: Another Lex failure

On Sunday, the Austrian vacationer had enriched a Christmas party with his presence.

In photos that show him in the midst of the Moosburg lions, he looks alert - an impression that was deceptive.

He only appeared in front of the interview wall yesterday after a lengthy session with the physios.

The cause?

"The back," Lex said, specifying: "I did all the runs on Friday afternoon and thought I was fine.

Then, on Friday afternoon, I suddenly had lumbago.” Pulled in not while shoveling snow or playing with the kids, but much more banally: “I got up from the chair, turned around a bit – apparently that was enough.”

Lex looked distressed when he reported his mishap - less so because the pain was so severe.

More like a student who already has a few days off in his file - which means that every further sick note costs effort.

Lex admitted that it was not easy for him to call the coach and confess his lumbago.

"He won't be happy," thought Lex - and saw this confirmed when Köllner took note of Lex's renewed break.

But: In a day or two, Lex estimates, the back should be able to train regularly again.

In addition, his knee, which cost him one or the other game in the first half of the season, is holding up.

It sounds strange in the current context, but the 33-year-old confirmed what he had indicated the day before with the Moosburg-Löwen: that he can now imagine extending his career beyond the season.

Literally, Lex said: "If I stay healthy and play a good second half of the season, you can think about it." Or now, very quietly.

"The start is suboptimal," Lex summarized his current condition, "but I'm still in good spirits - because my body did well last year.

I also worked a lot during the break to prevent potential injuries.”

And what about the prospects of forgetting the sporting crisis in the new year?

Representing the coach who was silent yesterday, Lex said: "I think we showed at the beginning of the season that we can perform well in the league - we have to get back to that." Preferably with a fit Lex, but for that matter, the captain is optimistic.

"It's getting better after the treatment," he said: "I hope that the lumbago will go away as quickly as it came." ULI KELLNER
