Manuel Neuer's absence poses major problems for Bayern Munich.
A look into the past shows: A second strong keeper would be worthwhile.
Munich – Who remembers Pepe Reina?
Probably not all FC Bayern fans anymore.
In the 2014/15 season, the Spanish keeper was under contract with the German record champions.
Name: Manuel Neuer |
Birthday: March 27, 1986 (age 36) |
Club: FC Bayern Munich (contract until 2024) |
Position: Goalkeeper |
Market value: 12 million (source: transfermarkt.de) |
Goalkeeper problem at Bayern: Pep Guardiola had two strong keepers
Reina was signed by Liverpool FC for 3 million euros, the year before he had been a regular keeper at SSC Naples, which is why quite a few experts rubbed their eyes in surprise when this transfer took place.
But it was important to Pep Guardiola that he had two almost equal goalkeepers in his squad.
This is currently the case with Manchester City.
With Ederson, Pep has his undisputed number one in the team there.
Stefan Ortega, one of the best Bundesliga keepers, was signed in the summer.
FC Bayern was also interested in the German-Spaniard at the time.

Goalkeeper problem at Bayern: bosses are looking for a new replacement
Now you can see that such a goalkeeper strategy is not quite as wrong as tz.de reports.
Manuel Neuer has been missing Bayern for at least six months with a broken leg.
Since Neuer will be 37 in March, it is questionable whether he will ever regain his old strength.
Therefore, the Bayern bosses are now thinking intensively about a new replacement and a transfer in winter.
However, the list of available goalkeepers is not very long.
Alexander Nübel would be obvious, who still has a contract on Säbener Straße until 2025 and has currently become a top performer at AS Monaco.
Manuel Neuer: Who will replace the Bayern goalkeeper?
However, there is currently no really familiar relationship between the 26-year-old Nübel and FC Bayern.
Therefore, a return in winter as an "emergency nail" for Neuer is actually inconceivable.
The situation is similar with David De Gea.

The Manchester United keeper's contract expires in the summer of 2023 so he would be available at an affordable price should he wish to leave Old Trafford.
Would a move from De Gea to FC Bayern be possible?
"I would be really, really shocked," says 90min journalist and Manchester United expert Scott Saunders in an interview with
tz.de
: "With the best will in the world, I can't imagine that."
Manuel Neuer injured: Navas or De Gea to Bayern?
"Unlikely"
A transfer from Keylor Navas to the Isar is also difficult to imagine.
Because Bayern's opponent in the round of 16 of the Champions League is Paris Saint-Germain.
PSG expert Alexandre Aflalo describes a Navas transfer to Bayern to
tz.de
as "unlikely".
With all the respect that Sven Ulreich enjoys on Säbener Straße, the Bayern bosses probably don't like going into the second half of the season with just him and 19-year-old Johannes Schenk.
In this respect, the 2014 transfer from Pepe Reina was not a stupid move at all, because they secured themselves against a possible Neuer failure.
This system has often been practiced by the top European teams in recent years.
However, due to the Corona crisis, many teams refrained from having a second strong keeper.
Currently only Chelsea and PSG can afford two almost equally good goalkeepers.

Goalkeeper problem at FC Bayern: Former substitute received a million salary for 193 minutes
Curious: Reina received a fat million dollar salary from FC Bayern and was only on the pitch for 193 minutes.
According to
Football Leaks
, the then 31-year-old is said to have collected almost 1.2 million euros.
By the way, Reina really wanted to go to Bayern at the time, as the then boss Karl-Heinz Rummenigge revealed.
"Reina wants to do this adventure, although he knows that with Manuel Neuer he has a number 1 in front of him, which, if nothing happens, will always remain number one," said Rummenigge at the time.
It remains to be seen whether Bayern will find another keeper in winter who absolutely wants to go to Munich.
