Nick Jäger achieved a top result in the Cross-DM, although he rolled over in the race.

For Jäger it was also the last appearance in the Penzberg jersey.

Löningen – The Instagram video post by the “Running Gags” running group was short and a little shaky – but it already revealed the essentials of Nick Jäger’s mood after his appearance at the DM in cross-country skiing.

There was a smile on his face and the statement "It was fun".

In an exquisite field of participants, the 23-year-old from TSV Penzberg took seventh place on the long distance (9.8 kilometers).

Even for Jäger, who was the best German at the half marathon in Valencia, which is the focus of global attention, "an outstanding achievement", as the TSV said in a statement.

On the other hand, there was also an unfinished sentence that began like this: "This shitty fall ..." A veritable rollover, just before the decisive scene of the race, made Jäger lose the connection to the very front.

In the end, it remained open whether a lot more would not have been possible that day.

Nick Jäger shines in seventh place in Cross Country Championships

The Penzberger, a biology student in Erlangen and a member of the local "Running Gags" troupe, initially ran in a leading group of ten athletes.

There he stayed at the end and tried to save energy.

The course was run on a 1.4-kilometre-long meadow circuit complete with straw bale obstacles and muddy mounds of earth.

After about ten minutes, Filmon Abraham (LG Telis Finanz Regensburg) launched an attack.

Only Samuel Fitwi (LG Vulkaneifel) and Markus Görger (LG Region Karlsruhe) were able to follow this increase in pace.

Shortly before the speed increase, Nick Jäger experienced his moment of shock: he fell at the tightest corner of the race and did a somersault.

"I just didn't lift my leg high enough and got caught in the grass with my spikes." As a result, he initially lost contact with his group.

The distance between the leading trio and the chasing group grew to almost 100 meters.

This crumbled visibly and Jäger caught up with some runners from half the distance.

At the beginning of the last lap, Görger had problems with his stomach and even had to give up the race.

Fitwi (29:28) won the German Championships ahead of Abraham (29:29) and Aaron Bienenfeld (SSC Hanau-Rodenbach/29:48).

Jäger crossed the finish line after 30:36 minutes.

The TSV athletes Lucas Herbeck (34:10/35.) and Markus Brennauer (36:38/47.) ran in the same race.

Together with Jäger, the Penzberg trio finished fifth in the team ranking.

The 23-year-old Herbeck was not entirely satisfied.

Due to a corona infection in mid-October, he was not in top form.

He therefore started rather cautiously and was able to make up a few places in the course of the race.

"I should have run more offensively, I could have done better today," said the Masters student self-critically.

Brennauer fell well short of his expectations.

From the third lap he was plagued by stomach cramps.

"My legs were fine, but as soon as I wanted to run faster, my stomach got in the way," said the 42-year-old teacher at a loss.

Nick Jäger changes clubs

For Nick Jäger, the appearance at the DM in cross-country skiing was the last official use in the jersey of TSV Penzberg for the time being.

The 23-year-old biology student is moving to LSC Höchstadt/Aisch in the new year.

In addition to Jäger and the newly crowned U23 champion in cross-country skiing, Florian Bremm (previously TV Leutershausen), other top runners will start for the Middle Franconian club from January 1, 2023.

By concentrating on a joint club, the athletes want to become more attractive for sponsors and thus not only make themselves more popular, but also make running more popular overall, explains Markus Brennauer from TSV Penzberg.

And why now the LSC Höchstadt/Aisch?

The reason for this is the physical proximity to Erlangen, where Jäger studied.

In any case, several of Jäger's running friends are already starting for this club, some of them have been trained by Melanie Jäger for some time.

In addition, all these athletes form the "Running Gags" training group.

This group regularly produces videos on "YouTube" that revolve around the topic of running.

The "Running Gags" include Niklas Buchholz (EM participant 2022 over 3000 meters obstacle 2022) and Brian Wisdom (fifth in the Athletics Championships 2022 over 3000 meters obstacle).

For Luk Jäger, on the other hand, 18th place in the U23 age group over 7.75 kilometers was easily explainable.

The 20-year-old student had a small infection the week before the championships and had to forego training.

At the beginning he ran at the end of the leading group, but had to lose contact quite quickly.

From now on, he always walked alone in the wind, which took a lot of strength: “I fought.

But running alone all the time was especially difficult mentally.” At 26:21 minutes, he was a little more than a minute behind winner Florian Bremm (TV Leutershausen).

The 22-year-old Bremm is trained by Melanie Jäger, the mother of the Jäger brothers, and is also one of the "running gags".
