Didier Deschamps: "When there is no Grail at the end, it's hard and it hurts a lot"

Didier Deschamps and Hugo Lloris shared their disappointment but also their pride after their defeat against Argentina.

More than an hour after the end of this breathtaking final, Didier Deschamps appeared at the microphone of TF1 looking defeated, in a weary tone.

“Coming back to 2-2 gives even more regrets,

asked the Blues coach at the start.

.

We didn't do the right thing for an hour.

With a lot of qualities and courage, we push the Argentinians to their last entrenchments.

I made changes so early because I wasn't happy with what I was seeing.

I was convinced that we would do better with other players.

Those who got out are no more guilty than the others.

But we no longer had all our strength.

We reverse a compromised situation thanks to our qualities and our mind.

We put a lot of heart and energy to come back from nowhere.

What is it playing?

A strike in the 120th minute pushed back with the tip of the foot by the Argentinian goalkeeper… But when we touch something and that, finally, it escapes us, it is even more difficult to digest.

Unfortunately, it wasn't enough, and the disappointment is enormous, it's hard.

It has been pure happiness for the staff and me to get through this month.

A human adventure, on that side, only positive.

But when there is no Grail at the end, it hurts.

Still at the microphone of TF1, the captain of the Blues, Hugo Lloris, was hardly less dejected.

“Unfortunately, we were too reactive in this final.

It was almost a boxing match, we went blow for blow.

If we have one regret, it's having completely missed our first half.

But we didn't give up, we fought until the end.

When it comes down to penalties, it's always cruel.

But we really gave everything from start to finish.

We come out of this month of competition empty.

We could have let go but we were able to turn the game around.

Afterwards, it does not want to smile with our chances at the end of the match.

The Argentines are to be congratulated.

They had a great tournament, a great final.

But the match could have swung to either side…”

We thought it was under control.

They came back.

It was a very, very complicated game.

Our team had this destiny which was to suffer

Emiliano Martinez, Argentina goalkeeper

Asked about the rest of his career in the France team, the record holder of the selections kicked into touch.

“Now is not the time to answer these questions.

It's a painful evening for all the players, the staff, the supporters.

Even if we have achieved great things, there is always this pain when we lose a final.

You have to take a little height, step back, before making a decision.

Sadness in the voice, Raphaël Varane also confided.

“We are very disappointed.

We gave everything… We had to face a lot of obstacles during the competition.

In the final, for an hour, we are not in the game.

We fought, we came back, we could have won… I'm very proud to be French, of this group.

We hold our heads up high,

however insists the defender of the France team

.

When we come back to equality, physically, we are better than the Argentines.

We believed in it, we gave it our all until the end.

Our journey was winding but with our mental strength and a lot of heart, we made it to the final and got back into the game.

But it was not enough to win.

We are therefore very disappointed, but we also feel a lot of pride…”

The tone was obviously quite different with Emiliano Martinez, the goalkeeper of the Argentina team.

“We suffered.

We thought it was under control.

They came back.

It was a very, very complicated game.

Our team had this destiny which was to suffer.

They almost scored again and luckily that foot

(the left, on Kolo Muani's shot)

defended it.

And afterwards, it was what I had dreamed of.

This World Cup, I dreamed it.

The shots on goal?

I was calm.

I always tell my colleagues to stay calm…”
