The newly built Lusail Iconic Stadium is considered the most important new building for the 2022 World Cup. The final is scheduled to take place here on December 18 in front of over 80,000 spectators.
Doha – The magnificent new building by the British architects Foster + Partners is enthroned in the heart of the new planned city of Lusail City and aims to combine Arabian tradition with the latest technology.
Reminiscent of the classic fanar lanterns of the Orient, the Lusail Iconic Stadium, with its intricate gold-colored facade, will be the center of attention worldwide on December 18 as the venue for the 2022 World Cup final.
Lusail Iconic Stadium: Background on the construction
For many decades, Lusail was just a small village inhabited mainly by pearl fishermen.
In 2005, the Qatari government announced that it would build a state-of-the-art new drawing board city, Lusail City, out of the desert.
After Qatar was selected to host the 2022 World Cup, plans emerged to build a major football stadium in Lusail, the 80,000-seat Lusail Iconic Stadium.
Also in the neighborhood are the 15,300-seat Lusail Sports Arena, home of the 2015 Men's Handball World Championship, and the Losail International Circuit.
In 2021, the Qatar Grand Prix of Formula 1 took place here for the first time as a replacement for the canceled Australian Grand Prix.
A sustainable stadium
Qatar has made sustainability a priority for the entire planned city of Lusail City.
The green areas are to be irrigated exclusively with recycled water.
The Lusail Iconic Stadium is located right next to a Doha Metro station, making it easy to get to by public transport.
Like all stadiums of the 2022 World Cup, it is air-conditioned so that the outside air, which is around 40 °C at this time of year, is cooled down to 27 °C.
Solar panels have been installed on the roofs of car parks and other facilities around the stadium, providing the air conditioning systems with sustainable solar energy.
If no events are taking place, the electricity generated is passed on to the houses in the vicinity.
How many spectators fit in Lusail Iconic Stadium?
The capacity is given as 80,000 and sometimes 86,250 seats.
As it was only completed in early 2022, unlike the other stadiums in Qatar, its operation could not be tested at the FIFA Arabic Cup 2021.
80,000 places are planned for the 2022 World Cup.

What will happen to the Lusail Iconic Stadium after the World Cup?
Since those responsible were already aware at the planning stage that Qatar did not have a permanent need for an 80,000-seat football stadium, the Lusail Iconic Stadium was designed from the outset as a temporary structure.
After the end of the 2022 World Cup, the interior will be transformed into a mix of smaller sports facilities, schools, shops and clinics.
The seats will be donated to sports projects around the world.
Lusail Iconic Stadium: scandals during the construction work
The construction work for the stadiums of the 2022 World Cup was criticized for a long time because of the poor working situation of the foreign construction workers.
Passports were often taken away from workers upon arrival in Qatar, and wages were not paid for months.
Other points of criticism were the accommodation, lack of security and non-stop work at up to 50 °C.
The Lusail Iconic Stadium was also affected by these scandals.
