France's superstar Kylian Mbappé had secured the Golden Boot as the best World Cup goal-getter after scoring eight goals in the final three times.

The 23-year-old was once more successful than Messi, who scored twice in the final.

In the event of a tie, the number of assists (3-2) would have decided the battle for the top scorer's crown in favor of Messi, who plays with Mbappé at Paris Saint-Germain.

Mbappé succeeded Englishman Harry Kane, who triumphed as top scorer four years ago.

Messi missed out on the Golden Boot, but was recognized by Fifa as the World Cup's best player.

The Argentine succeeds the Croatian Luka Modrić, who was honored as the best World Cup player in Moscow in 2018.

Messi had already received the award in Brazil in 2014 when Germany won the World Cup.

The election is made by Fifa's Technical Study Group (TSG).

The only German winner in the vote for the best World Cup player was goalkeeper Oliver Kahn in 2002 at the World Cup finals in South Korea and Japan.

Argentina's Enzo Fernández was chosen as the best young player, while his team-mate Emiliano Martínez, who saved Kingsley Coman's attempt in the penalty shoot-out against the French, was chosen as the best goalkeeper.

Four years ago in Moscow, France's then 19-year-old Kylian Mbappé was named best young player.

In 2014 in Brazil, a Frenchman was also honored in Paul Pogba.

In 2010 in South Africa, Thomas Müller was the best youngster in the World Cup finals, in 2006 in Germany Lukas Podolski had this honor.

Penalty killer Martínez succeeded Belgian Thibaut Courtois.

In 2014, Manuel Neuer was honored with the Golden Glove as the best keeper.
