Actually, Raphael Haaser would have had every reason to be happy on Monday afternoon.

The Austrian finished ninth at the World Cup in Alta Badia and thus celebrated his best result in this competition.

Because actually the giant slalom discipline is not his.

But Haaser didn't feel like celebrating.

"It was very important with regard to my service man, who would certainly have wished that I could do my best today," Haaser said after the race on

But what happened?

The drama already happened on Sunday when the 25-year-old drove in for the first race in Alta Badia.

In doing so, Haaser made a serious mistake.

The victim of the tragic accident was his serviceman.

Haaser made an inside ski error, was then unable to react and slammed into his helper.

The serviceman was seriously injured.

Diagnosis: lower leg fracture!

Afterwards, Haaser was completely lost and missed the second round.

"I had the most difficult day of my career, it wasn't easy to hide that," he said on

Marco Odermatt wins in Alta Badia – Schmid races to 5th place

On Monday, in the second giant slalom race in Alta Badia, which is not far from the skiing Mecca of Cortina d'Ampezzo, Haaser achieved his best result, almost sensationally.

One day after third place, the Swiss won the third of four giant slalom races of the season on the Gran Risa.

After the ninth podium finish in his tenth race of the season, Odermatt has further extended its lead in the overall Alpine World Cup.

Behind the 25-year-old, the Norwegian Henrik Kristoffersen finished second ahead of the Slovenian Zan Kranjec.

And the Germans?

They also drew attention to themselves.

Alexander Schmid also celebrated his best result of the season.

“Cool” is what the 28-year-old ski racer called his fifth place in the giant slalom World Cup on Monday.

"That was super exciting and makes you want more," confessed Schmid, who, after seventh place in the first race, moved up two places in the heat.

Giant slalom in Alta Badia: first World Cup points for Grammel and Gratz

Meanwhile, Anton Grammel (Kressbronn) scored their first World Cup points of the season in 21st place and Fabian Gratz (Altenau) in 24th place.

“This is my best result this year.

I can definitely be satisfied with that,” said the 24-year-old Grammel.
