Buenos Aires – Pure chaos in Buenos Aires: According to the police in the Argentine capital, around five million fans celebrated the world champions around superstar Lionel Messi.

After winning the title at the 2022 World Cup, the Argentine national team drove to the capital on Tuesday afternoon in an open-topped bus from the AFA football association's grounds outside the gates of Buenos Aires.

In view of the huge crowd, however, the bus only advanced at walking pace or sometimes not at all.

The event had to be canceled and Messi and colleagues even switched to a helicopter.

Finally, the players left the vehicle at a sports facility and boarded two water police helicopters.

They then skimmed the waiting fans in downtown Buenos Aires.

Millions of people cheered the players in the helicopters. 

According to the federal police, the helicopter carrying captain Messi, national coach Lionel Scaloni and the World Cup trophy also flew over the obelisk, where Argentine football fans traditionally celebrate their victories.

Hundreds of thousands had been waiting there for the team since the morning.

“All hell broke loose” after the World Cup victory on Sunday.

State of emergency in Buenos Aires: fans jump on Argentina bus

Chaotic scenes had previously taken place in the Argentine capital.

Fans flocked to bridges and the city highway, many climbed traffic lights and traffic signs.

At around 30 degrees, the fans waited for hours in the blazing sun for the national team to arrive.

Two fans jumped onto the team bus.

videos published by

La Nación newspaper.

Several players tried to dissuade him from his plan with a show of hands.

A second man landed on the back of the bus, slipped, and fell onto the street.

It was initially unclear whether he was injured.

Cancellation of World Cup bus parade "a shame"

The subway service was stopped.

The airline Aerolíneas Argentinas warned of problems with delayed flights due to the traffic chaos.

The cell phone networks were also overloaded at times.

President Alberto Fernández had ordered a national holiday for Tuesday so that the country could celebrate the historic victory.

The Argentinian association president Claudio Tapia raised allegations against the security authorities for breaking off the party.

“They didn't allow us to greet all the people at the obelisk - and the same security forces who escorted us didn't allow us to proceed.

A thousand apologies on behalf of all master players.

Shame,” Tapia wrote on Twitter.

During the trip through Buenos Aires, Messi was still sitting on the bus with four of his teammates, drinking from a glass from time to time in the bright sunshine and waving at the euphoric fans.

The golden World Cup trophy was also presented.

The seven-time world footballer published a video with scenes from his career on Instagram.

"It was almost three decades in which the ball gave me a lot of joy and also a little sadness.

It was always my dream to become world champion and I didn't want to stop trying even though I knew it might never happen," he wrote.

Earlier, Messi kept his fans updated with pictures on social media.

Messi is in bed with the World Cup trophy next to him

After arriving in Buenos Aires at night and driving past thousands of fans, Argentina's superstar took a little break.

And the newly crowned soccer world champion was not alone in bed - next to him was the golden World Cup trophy.

The 35-year-old posted three photos on Instagram, in the first he is "sleeping" in bed, his left hand on the trophy, in the second he smiles at the camera with the trophy and in the third he is with a trophy and a mate- see cup.

Messi wants to continue playing for Argentina.
