Jens Lehmann: loan Nübel can become a new competitor – "if he stays abroad"

After Manuel Neuer's injury, Jens Lehmann expects a competition for the DFB goal, in which Alexander Nübel could also get involved.

Munich – At the 2006 World Cup, Jens Lehmann was between the posts and was one of the main people responsible for the semi-finals of the German national team.

After two unsuccessful World Cup tournaments that ended in the preliminary round and the injury to DFB captain Manuel Neuer, the ex-national keeper is not worried about the EM 2024 in his own country.

He also commented on the current goalkeeper situation at FC Bayern.

Neuer's accident, which broke his lower leg while ski touring, was the trigger for many discussions.

Since the 36-year-old's surprising injury, Bayern have been on the lookout for a candidate, and the reserve keepers are now hoping for their chance in the national team.

Jens Lehmann has no doubts that the two-time footballer of the year will make a comeback.

"I trust him to come back fully," said the 53-year-old in an interview with Sky with regard to a possible career end.

“He has the advantage physically that he's better than most.

Even if he dropped ten percent, he wouldn't be worse than the others," said the former Schalke and BVB goalkeeper about Neuer.

However, he believes that the competition within the DFB keeper will be fueled by the Bayern professional's end of the season.

"I would wish Manuel again.

But we have Kevin Trapp, Marc-André ter Stegen and Bernd Leno, who plays well in the Premier League,” said Lehmann, who brought up another candidate.

The native of Essen adds: "Or Alexander Nübel, if he stays abroad and maybe plays internationally there.

There are some who could compete.” Currently, Nübel, who is currently on loan to AS Monaco, is back in the focus of FC Bayern.

Sports director Hasan Salihamidzic described a return of the 26-year-old to

as an "obvious solution".

Nübel, who has not yet been nominated for the national team, is still contractually bound to Monaco until 2025.

Lehmann does not write off the Bayern substitute keeper Sven Ulreich either.

"Whenever he had to play, he always played brilliantly.
