Israeli basketball bowed its head this evening (Friday) with the news of the death of Willie Sims at the age of 64. Sims played 18 years in Israel, five of them in Maccabi Tel Aviv.
Together with the Yellows, Sims won five championships, and after receiving the sad news, the club paid tribute to Sims.
"The Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball club bows its head and lowers its flag to half-mast following the untimely passing of Willie Sims, one of the stars of the team in the late eighties and early nineties, at the age of 64. Willie was always a fighter and an athlete with a wonderful smile, who won five championships with the Yellows in five seasons, in three State Cups and appeared three times in the European Final Four. We send a big hug and our sincere condolences to his family, his friends, his many colleagues in the industry and to the entire Israeli basketball family for the heavy loss. May his memory be blessed."
A legend that really was: the block that won Maccabi Tel Aviv a game in Barcelona
Chairman of Maccabi Tel Aviv, Shimon Mizrachi, added: "Willy was a soul, a soul, a soul."
A player in all of his limbs and SSA Gidio.
An exemplary athlete who knew with his sportsmanship to encourage others who were with him on the field.
'And it's a pity for Dabdin and we don't forget.'
The club bows its head and lowers its flag to half-mast upon learning of the bitter news."
