There has been a curious mix-up in the Spanish sports press.
The journalist Cristina Cubero spoke in the TV show "El Chringuito" about the preliminary round of the German national soccer team at the World Cup in Qatar and described Toni Kroos as one of the worst players of the tournament.
The German midfielder from Real Madrid is no longer a national player.
But he took it with humor.
"I knew someone would blame me," Kroos wrote on Twitter with a laughing emoji.
»Honor to you as a person«
Cubero then cleared up the misunderstanding: she had confused Kroos with Thomas Müller from FC Bayern Munich.
»Hahahahahaha, sorry Toni.
Deep admiration for you.
I think your selection was a disappointment.
But honor for you as a person,” Cubero tweeted after her faux pas.
Kroos left the national team after the 2020 European Championship, when the Germans lost to England in the round of 16.
He made his debut for the DFB in 2010 and played every minute of winning the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
After the tournament, he moved to Real Madrid from Bayern Munich, where he won the Champions League in 2013.
There followed four more titles in the premier class (2016, 2017, 2018, 2022) and three championship titles (2017, 2020, 2022).
The World Cup in Qatar was the first major tournament since Kroos' retirement.
Germany lost their opening game to Japan and missed out on the knockout stage despite beating Costa Rica 4-2 in a dramatic group stage final.
After 2018, it was the second time in a row that the DFB team did not survive the group stage of a World Cup.
