Evacuated by helicopter, after having remained inanimate for a long time on the track, the French skier first made his relatives fear the worst.
The diagnosis finally turned out to be a little more reassuring.
“Matthieu Bailet fell during the first official training session for the Bormio descent, he suffered a major concussion,” wrote the French Ski Federation (FFS) in a press release, shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Monday.
No fractures were detected.
After 48 hours under observation at the Italian hospital in Sondalo, the Niçois will be repatriated to France and will follow “the concussion protocol put in place by the medical service”, specifies the FFS.
At 26, Matthieu Bailet, who represents the next generation of the French speed team (downhill, super-G), suffers a setback just over a month before the World Championships scheduled in France in Courchevel and Méribel (February 6-19).
In addition, Victor Schuller, also the victim of a fall during this training, suffered a fractured left wrist and will be repatriated to France on Tuesday for surgery.
The men's World Cup is stopping off this week in Bormio for a downhill, scheduled for Wednesday, then a super-G on Thursday, on one of the most demanding tracks on the circuit.
