This winter, Jérôme Boateng may have to look for a new club.

At Olympique Lyon they no longer rely on the world champion.

Lyon – After leaving FC Bayern, Jérôme Boateng only went downhill from a sporting point of view.

In the summer of 2021, the 34-year-old moved to Olympique Lyon on a free transfer after Bayern Munich had not offered him a new contract after ten years at the club.

Now the former international is about to end after a year and a half in France.

The reason for this is the new owner of the first division club.

At the end of the year, Olympique Lyon announced the takeover of the club, the American John Textor secured 77.5 percent of all club shares for just over 327 million euros.

This means that OL is part of the "Eagle Football Holding", which also owns shares in the Premier League club Crystal Palace, in the traditional Brazilian club Botafogo and in the Belgian second division club RWD Molenbeek.

With the sale, the club is breaking new ground in the future, and a new transfer strategy is also to be implemented.

In the future, Lyon will increasingly focus on training their own talents, with veteran stars like Boateng losing out.

, there could be personnel changes as early as January, which may also affect the 2014 world champion.

After playing 27 competitive games in his first season under ex-BVB coach Peter Bosz, he was sorted out by the Dutchman at the beginning of the current season.

Only after the change of coach in October was Boateng allowed to play again from the 11th matchday.

He started four times under new coach Laurent Blanc, but was always substituted on.

In the last game before the World Cup break, he was again missing from the squad.

Since Boateng is said to be one of the top earners in the team, the performance no longer corresponds to the club's expenses.

That's another reason why the Berliner could be a thorn in the side of the owner Textor.

Boateng's future is uncertain again after his Bayern exit.

A comeback in Germany should be difficult in view of his image, the court case for alleged bodily harm against his ex-partner is still ongoing.

Boateng is still contractually bound to the Lyonnais until summer 2023, an extension of the contract should not be in the room.

A departure in winter is apparently much more likely, according to the report the club is pushing for a transfer of the central defender as soon as possible.

Apparently, Lyon would even let the ex-DFB star go free of charge in order to be able to remove him from the payroll.
