The swimmers of TSV Jahn Freising feel financially let down by the city.

Sports consultant Jürgen Mieskes now counters these allegations.

Freising – This message made waves in the staaden time: The swimming department of TSV Jahn Freising is due to the high fees for using the fresch before the end.

"As it currently looks, we will have to close it in its current form in the course of the first quarter of 2023," said Chairman Franz Lupp in a press conference (we reported).

Now sports consultant Jürgen Mieskes speaks up.

He counters the criticism of the city of Freising, describes the difficult financial situation - and shows what options the club has to cushion the deficit in the division.

Mieskes explains the extent to which the city of Freising supports TSV Jahn financially

The city of Freising is doing too little to promote sport, which is so important for children.

You let the swimmers down.

He had been confronted with such criticism in the past few days, reports Mieskes in an interview with the FT.

"I categorically reject that.

The city of Freising does a lot,” emphasizes the sports officer with regard to the voluntary grants that the municipality gives to the sports clubs year after year.

These consist of a subsidy of 30 euros for each child and young person up to the age of 18 as well as a subsidy for the trainer.

In 2020, TSV Jahn received a total of over 65,000 euros.

In 2021 it was more than 71,000 euros and in 2022 over 63,000 euros.

"The decline is solely due to the fact that fewer children were registered with TSV Jahn this year," explains Mieskes, but emphasizes: "The city continued to pay out the funds in 2021, although hardly any sport was possible because of Corona."

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

City of Freising: Increasing the subsidies is currently impossible - baths are basically a negative business

Increasing these funds is not possible in the current situation with the energy crisis, inflation and the like.

"In 2022, the city distributed more than 207,000 euros to the sports clubs - that's a hefty sum.

And one should not forget that there are other areas such as culture.

That's why we can't accommodate the swimming club - also because of our tight budget situation.

More is simply not possible.”

The basic problem: the operation of the baths is in itself a loss-making affair.

According to plant manager Andreas Voigt from Stadtwerke Freising, the shortfall at fresch this year alone is around 3.5 million euros.

"In order to be able to work cost-effectively, you would have to double the admission prices," says Mieskes.

"But it is and should be a bath for the entire population - one that everyone can afford."

But why are the usage costs for TSV Jahn so high?

"This also has to do with the fact that the club is doing such a good job and has expanded its swimming department," says Voigt.

For comparison: the club used the swimming pool in the Josef-Hofmiller-Gymnasium for five hours a week at the time - now, in fresch, it's 60 hours.

“Of course it adds up.

However, we are accommodating TSV Jahn in that he only has to pay for two lanes, even if he uses three," says the Stadtwerke boss.

This saves the association around 5000 euros a year.

"We also have a sponsorship contract with TSV Jahn, which amounts to 5,000 euros a year and runs until 2026.

And it would be absolutely legitimate if the club looked for additional sponsors.”

Mieskes does not believe that TSV Jahn Freising has to close the swimming division

And how is the Jahn swimming section going?

"I can't imagine that it has to be closed," says Mieskes.

The club is doing a lot to counteract the deficit and has increased the swimmers' monthly contribution from four to eight euros.

In addition, it is definitely an option to reallocate money within the departments: "I don't think that members from other departments would then run away from the club," says the sports officer.

Furthermore, those responsible at TSV Jahn would have to clarify whether it would not be possible to reduce the total hours of track use in order to save money.

"It's great that the club wants to expand its department further.

But swimming is a relatively expensive sport, like ice hockey,” explains Mieskes.

"The city cannot increase the grants and, given the fresch deficit, has no leeway to reduce the fees."
