What is it like living in the same village as Michael Schumacher?

Two residents talk about the past and the present with the multiple Formula 1 world champion.

Gland – In a tranquil little town on Lake Geneva, a Formula 1 legend has been living in camera for almost ten years.

Michael Schumacher is an invisible citizen in Gland.

After his serious skiing accident, no information about his specific health condition has come through to this day.

The Netflix documentary “Schumacher”, released last September, in which Schumacher reports, among other things, on a near-death experience, gave a deep insight.

"Michael is still here.

Different, but he's here," said his wife Corinna.

This article dates from July and is one of those that attracted particular interest in 2022.

That is why we are presenting it to you again at the end of the year.

Michael Schumacher, the invisible resident of Gland: "We used to see him"

In Gland, people have long since gotten used to life without – and yet somehow with – Michael Schumacher.

The American magazine

Sports Illustrated

devoted a detailed review to the life of the seven-time Formula 1 world champion.

Jon Wertheim, one of the most renowned sports journalists in the USA, traveled to Switzerland and visited the 11,000-strong community of Gland, where the Schumacher family has lived for over 20 years.

There he spoke to two residents about Schumi.

"We used to see him, he was among us.

Of course nobody sees him anymore.

Sometimes we see his wife riding horses.

But Michael?

Never,” a woman tells him.

Schumi lives his "second" life behind the high fence of his lakeside villa with a view of the Swiss Alps.

He owes nothing to the public.

Michael Schumacher: People in Gland "don't want to talk about him"

"We don't want to forget him.

But we don't really want to talk about him either," another resident said thoughtfully.

The name Schumacher will always be associated with the place, and the people of Gland know that too.

The former Ferrari driver can be more than proud of his son.

Mick Schumacher not only made it into Formula 1, he also scored his first points in the last two races at Silverstone and Spielberg.

But he cannot share these moments with his father, who put him in a kart as a little plug.

"I would give up everything just for that," says Mick in the documentary about his father.

Deep down, Schumi is definitely happy - he just can't show it.
