The longtime sports director of the Süddeutsche Zeitung, Ludger Schulze, has died.

FC Bayern praised the journalist as an "extraordinary person".

Munich – Bayern Munich Honorary President Uli Hoeneß has described the death of longtime sports reporter Ludger Schulze as a great loss.

“German sports journalism has lost an extraordinary person in Ludger Schulze.

He always observed FC Bayern critically but always fairly and described all the ups and downs of the club in a wonderful way," said Hoeneß on Tuesday.

The Süddeutsche Zeitung had previously reported on the death of its longtime head of sports department.

According to his family, Schulze died at the age of 72 in his hometown of Laufen an der Salzach.

“I valued him as an opinionated journalist who was trustworthy to talk to.

He's also been a good friend for many years," Hoeneß continued.

Schulze, born in Beckum in Westphalia, worked for the Süddeutsche Zeitung from 1976 to 2010, with a short break.

After his retirement, he also worked for the FC Bayern Munich Museum.

The sports journalist wrote numerous texts there and was responsible, among other things, for a homage to Gerd Müller.

“Ludger Schulze was a formative author and character in German sports journalism.

His pointed texts have been a treat for every football lover,” explained the Munich club president Herbert Hainer.

"FC Bayern is also grateful to Ludger Schulze for becoming an important pillar in the construction of the FC Bayern Museum.

His lyrics will live on.”

In 2017, Schulze was honored for his life's work by the Association of German Sports Journalists (VDS).

He is "one of the best sports journalists that Germany has ever produced," it said in the laudation, he was "a formative character and writer for the Süddeutsche Zeitung".
