Good qualification jump, easy opponent? Far from it: At the start of the Four Hills Tournament in Oberstdorf, Karl Geiger had to deal with the best Austrian in the classification. Halvor Egner Granerud flew away from everyone.

At the start of the Four Hills Tournament, the German ski jumpers presented themselves in good form in the qualification for the competition in Oberstdorf.

As expected, the seven DSV starters could not keep up with the top favorites, but the squad led by Karl Geiger, who qualified seventh, managed to qualify for the jumping on Thursday (4.30 p.m. / ZDF and Eurosport).

The outstanding man of the day was Norway's Halvor Egner Granerud, who, despite poor wind conditions, jumped 133.5 meters and clearly outstripped even the overall World Cup leader Dawid Kubacki from Poland (132 meters) as the second in the qualification.

Behind him, the Slovenian Timi Zajc, who also jumped 133.5 meters but had much better conditions than Granerud, completed the top three.

National coach Stefan Horngacher was satisfied with his jumpers after a solid team performance.

“The point gaps up to third place are very small.

We've done our homework and have come much closer to the top of the world," said Horngacher on ZDF.

In addition to Geiger, who was only 1.9 points short of third place, Andreas Wellinger also presented himself in improved form in eighth place.

For the first time since the beginning of the corona pandemic, numerous fans cheered on the jumpers at the prestigious event around the turn of the year.

16,000 spectators at the Schattenbergschanze already spread a relaxed atmosphere during the qualification.

The mode of the Four Hills Tournament provides that the order of qualification results in 25 couples who compete against each other in an elimination competition on the day of the competition.

In addition to the 25 winners of the direct duels, the five with the best points qualify as "lucky losers" for the second round.

It is already clear that one of the favorites will have to take this route on Thursday: Because Austria's Stefan Kraft messed up his qualification jump, the third in the overall World Cup will compete against Geiger in a knockout duel.

The duels of the German jumpers at a glance:

Markus Eisenbichler – Fatih Arda Ipcioglu (Turkey)

Constantin Schmid – Artti Aigro (Estonia)

Pius Paschke – Jan Hoerl (Austria)

Giovanni Bresadola (Italy) – Stephan Leyhe

Philipp Raimund – Vilho Palosaari (Finland)

Andreas Wellinger – Muhammed Ali Bedir (Turkey)

Karl Geiger – Stefan Kraft (Austria)
