Shortly after the death of Brazilian sports icon Pelé, the Albert Einstein Hospital in São Paulo published the cause of the former world-class striker's death.

São Paulo – Soccer legend Pelé died on Thursday evening at the age of 82.

Around 8 p.m. Central European Time, his daughter Kely Nascimento announced the news on Instagram after the entire family had spent the last few days with the seriously ill 82-year-old.

The clinic where Pelé died has now announced the cause of death, as reported by tz.de.

Edson Arantes do Nascimento, Pelé's real name, was last treated for persistent cancer at the Albert Einstein Hospital in São Paulo.

In September last year, a tumor in the colon was removed from the three-time soccer world champion.

Pelé is dead: hospital announces cause of death – “multiple organ failure”

The Albert Einstein Hospital published a statement on the prominent deceased on Thursday evening.

In it, the clinic not only announced the exact time of death, but also the exact cause of the death of the former superstar.

"It is with great sadness that we confirm that Edson Arantes do Nascimento, also known as 'Pelé', died today, December 29, 2022 at 3:27 p.m. 

(7:27 p.m. CET; editor's note)

For most of Brazil's 214 million people, the news of Pelé's death came as a shock.

That is also why the Brazilian government ordered a three-day national mourning after the news was announced, as outgoing President Jair Bolsonaro announced in a Thursday.

Pelé dead: Brazil's "king of football" will be buried on Tuesday

Pelé proved with his actions "that he was not only a great athlete, but also a great citizen and patriot who made the name of Brazil known everywhere," the communiqué said.

With Pelé, the record world champion loses his “king of football” and “one of the greatest athletes of all time”, as the government called him.

On Tuesday he will be buried in Santos, where he played for eighteen years before his adventure abroad in the USA.
