Liverpool FC keeps the pressure on the international ranks.
Coach Jürgen Klopp's team managed to win 2-1 (2-1) over Leicester City at home on Friday at Anfield – but without scoring a goal themselves.
Three days after the 3-1 win at Aston Villa, the hosts came under pressure after Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall gave Leicester an early 1-0 lead (4th minute) and needed the help of defender Wout Faes.
The 24-year-old Belgium international, who has only been with Leicester since September, then experienced some of the worst minutes of his football career.
The central defender scored an own goal in the 38th minute – and another in the 45th.
He stood there with outstretched arms and couldn't believe it himself.
Even Klopp felt sorry for the defender: "I had that once in my career - that a player scored two own goals.
I really feel for him," said Klopp after the game and the second win in a row after the World Cup break.
'You couldn't have any worse luck.
But these things happen.
The boy will survive, of course,” Klopp continued.
Rare scenes in the Premier League
Faes only joined the 2016 English champions from Stade Reims in September for around 17 million euros.
According to data provider Opta, he is only the fourth player in the Premier League to score two own goals in a game.
With their fourth league victory in a row, Liverpool has re-established contact with the European starting places.
"If it's only 2-1 against a good opponent, then you have to fight your way through.
We did that and I'm happy with that, but of course we have to play better," said Klopp.
The club remains sixth in the table, but has reduced the gap to Manchester United to one point for the time being.
