  • The German ski jumpers want to do better at the New Year's competition than at the start in Oberstdorf.

  • But the competition never sleeps.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen – The 71st Four Hills Tournament started last Thursday with a setback for the German ski jumpers.

In the traditional opening event on the Schattenbergschanze in Oberstdorf, Karl Geiger finished fourth as the best DSV athlete, Andreas Wellinger was sixth.

Surprisingly little came from the other German athletes.

Four Hills Tournament

December 29, 2022 to January 6, 2023

Location: Oberstdorf, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Innsbruck, Bischofshofen

Record winner: Janne Ahonen (5)

Defending champion: Ryōyū Kobayashi

Four Hills Tournament: DSV-Adler disappointed at the start - Eisenbichler only in 33rd place

Philipp Raimund finished the first of four stops on the tour in 14th place, Stephan Leyhe was twentieth.

The bronze medalist from Beijing Markus Eisenbichler also disappointed with 33rd place, his colleague Constantin Schmid finished four places ahead of him in 29th place. Pius Paschke was the last German to take 41st place out of 50.

At the second competition on New Year's Day in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the DSV-Adler hope to use their home advantage one last time.

The Norwegian team was still able to celebrate in the first competition, as Halvor Egner Granerud had prevailed by a long way in front of the two Poles Piotr Zyla and Dawid Kubacki.

Granerud, who railed against the jury after his victory in Oberstdorf, wants to extend his lead on the second mandatory date of the tour.

Four Hills Tournament: Temperatures cause mixed feelings - "13 degrees is weird"

During the qualification for the New Year's competition on Saturday, which Kubacki won, it was quite warm at 13 degrees.

However, it is questionable whether the high temperatures in Garmisch are beneficial.

"It was freezing cold in Beijing, but basically I prefer it cold because: We are winter sports enthusiasts," said Karl Geiger, the best German jumper so far.

"Ten degrees less would be nice, because New Year's Eve with 13 degrees is strange," agreed Andreas Wellinger, Olympic champion from 2018.

Geiger's roommate Eisenbichler, on the other hand, did not complain, but saw the positives in the good weather.

"I think it's cool.

The fans don't freeze, we don't freeze.

What do you like more?” says the man from Siegsdorf.

Double-digit temperatures with sunshine are also predicted for Sunday.
