Franz Beckenbauer remembers: Pelé called me his “white brother”

According to his own statement, Beckenbauer had already refrained from traveling to Qatar during the World Cup for the same reasons.

In recent years, he has suffered from heart problems and an eye attack that has reduced his vision.

A current photo of the two-time world champion only appeared shortly before Christmas.

The two football idols Beckenbauer and Pelé have had less contact recently, "because we were both injured," said the Bavarian.

“But a friendship like that lasts a lifetime.

The good memories remain for us.” As the Munich resident says, Pelé called him his “white brother”.

"And he was like that, like a brother.

He radiated warmth even to complete strangers.”

Funeral service in the stadium of Pelé's ex-club FC Santos - funeral with the family

Without the Honorary President of FC Bayern, the funeral will take place in a high-rise cemetery in the Brazilian port city of Santos.

According to Pelé's longtime club FC Santos, his body will be taken to the Memorial Necropole Ecumênica on Tuesday after the funeral service at the Estádio Urbano Caldeira.

He will be buried there in close family circles.
