Unpleasant reports from Iran.
Local police arrested a number of unidentified soccer players in a raid on a New Year's Eve party where alcohol was served in violation of the Islamic prohibition, Iranian media reported.
Also, mixing between women and men outside of marriage and drinking alcohol are forbidden according to Iran's Islamic laws, while social restrictions are among the issues that have caused mass unrest in recent months, following the death in custody of Mehsa Amini, a woman accused of violating the country's strict dress code.
The state-affiliated Tasnim news agency said that several active and former players of a leading soccer club in Tehran were arrested at a party east of the capital.
"Some of the players were in an abnormal condition due to alcohol consumption," Tasnim reported without giving further details.
The YJC news agency, another prominent state-affiliated news outlet, said the meeting was a birthday party, adding that all the detainees had been released except for one person, who is not a soccer player.
The Fars news agency, which is also affiliated with the state, quoted a prosecutor as saying that a case has been opened against those arrested, and details will be published later.
So far, there has been no response from the Iranian Football Association.
