About a month after ending its path in the 2022 World Cup with a loss to the Netherlands in the round of 16, the United States team is back in the headlines with a particularly strange story.
The coach of the national team in the last tournament, Greg Berholter, claimed that he fell victim to blackmail that forced him to reveal that he kicked his wife in an incident that occurred 31 years ago.
Following the disclosure, the team announced that it would investigate the case and also the issue of extortion.
The 49-year-old Berholter, who according to reports in the United States terminated his contract at the beginning of the new civil year, said that during the World Cup, the team received a contact from an official who claimed to have information that could "take down" him, thus leading to the end of his role in the team.
The coach decided to reveal to the public the event that took place somewhere in 1991, four months into his relationship with Rosalind Berholter - his girlfriend at the time and his current wife.
Berholter claimed that the two got into a heated confrontation, following which he kicked her legs.
The two separated following the incident, but seven months later they returned and recently even celebrated 25 years of marriage.
Berholter emphasized that the lessons they learned from that evening helped to stabilize their relationship and that such an incident has not recurred since then, but this did not prevent the national team from issuing a statement stating that it would investigate the case and even the possibility that a third party "behaved inappropriately" towards a team member - or in this case blackmailed the coach .
In the United States there are already those who claim that the person who admitted to behaving violently towards his partner should not be employed, even if 31 years have passed, while others claim that the statute of limitations of the case should not affect the decision whether to keep him on the job.
In any case, Barholter may not continue in his position in preparation for the 2026 World Cup, which the United States will host along with its neighbors Canada and Mexico.

It was later revealed on ESPN that Claudio Reyna, the father of national team player Gio Reyna, was the one who sent messages to the senior officials of the American Association and threatened to reveal "sensitive details" about the coach.
Claudio Reyna was formerly a player of the US national team, and is currently the professional manager of the Austin FC team from the MLS. He started sending the messages after his son was informed that he would not be a senior team player on the squad during the World Cup.
It turns out that between Claudio Reyna and Greg Berholter there is a long relationship that spanned decades. They played together as high school boys and on the U.S. junior national teams, with parallel careers from 1996 to 2004, when their wives - Daniela Reyna and Rosalind Berholter - were also on the same team at the University of North Carolina.
The two used to compliment each other.
When Barholter was named coach of the US national team, Reyna said he was an "exciting and exciting choice." Barholter complimented Gio and said "we have a strong bond." Reyna, 20, has battled injuries in recent years but came into the tournament after playing regularly in Dortmund's uniform this season. But in the four games in the World Cup, he participated only twice - in the last 7 minutes against England and 45 minutes against the Netherlands - and according to the reports "did not react well" to the decision about his lesser status..
